Cell Phones in the ICU

Critical Care, the online intensive care journal, published a study made in the Netherlands. The aim of the study was to assess and classify incidents of electromagnetic interference (EMI) by second-generation and third-generation mobile phones on critical care medical equipment.

Bottom line: Yes. Cell phones can actually change setting on ventilators and IV pumps.

Recommendations: Keep cell phones at least 1 meter away from these devices.

Click on Medical Links (upper left) to see the study.

Kaiser Santa Rosa ICU Group Site
04/08

This Yahoo Group is a communication/collaboration tool designed for the ICU staff. It allows and encourages two-way interaction.  You can review posting from the managers, post messages of you own for discussion, share documents, show off your pictures, and create polls for everyone to vote on.  The Database and ICU Calendar will keep updated on what's going on in the unit.  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ksroicu

Remember, this site resides on Yahoo's servers - not on the Kaiser secure servers. Let's not use patient's full names.

If you know someone who has not yet signed up to access the site, have them go the site.  There, they can "Join This Group".  If they do not already have a Yahoo login they will have to sign up with Yahoo first. (Yeah. I know.  One more login!)

A slow moment in a very busy evening shift. Cyndi (then our UA) works the phone, Barbara (RT) and Diana discuss a patient's respiratory status, and Marlene (then a CCD RN) updates GRASP (then, and still, a pain in the butt) on the computer.
