Stenhousemuir v Caledonian (04/01/92)
Another opportunity to see Caley in action in a Cup-tie arose with this fixture. The match took place on a Saturday but I recall that we couldnt get home after the match by rail without having to stay overnight at a B&B. My eldest lad, William, (now affectionately known as Techno Gringo..lol) accompanied me to this match, and although hes not a footy fan, he did enjoy the trip.
I wasnt quite sure where Stenhousemuir played their football but this was soon found with the aid of various football books etc. Nearest station was Larbert and relatively easy to get to. We left home at around 08:00 to travel to Birmingham New Street station where we caught the through train to Edinburgh. We eventually arrived at Larbert at about 13:30 and went in search of the ground. Once there, there was no sign of life around the ground and I got that sinking feeling that the game had been called off. Life was, however, discovered around the main stand area and the car/coach park area.
I recall there was a fairly good turnout of Caley supporters and they made a little bit of noise under the covered terrace area. Caley played some good football that day and must have been ruing missed chances as they went in 1-0 down at halt-time. During the interval I could see that Techno was looking a bit dejected. When asked if he was ok he replied I just want Caley to win dad. I told him that Caley were just warming up in the first half and theyd score some goals in the second. Caley went on to win 1-4 and I couldnt wipe the smile off his face (or mine !!).
We arrive back at home at around 17:00 the following Sunday still full of smiles. |
