ICT v Clyde 28/02/04
This was another of those trips where the weather changes for the worse when my weekend off comes around. Travel plans are already in place with flights booked so there is no turning back, cancelling a flight means no refund. In this situation its best to travel anyway and make the most of it, keeping fingers crossed for the game to be on.
Once again we travel North on the Friday prior to the game and head for Glasgow. This time our flight is slightly delayed which meant wed miss our train connection in Glasgow. This isnt too much of a hardship as it means sitting in a pub to await the next one!
Saturday morning - after a heavy overnight frost and a sprinkling of snow it was with trepidation that we scoffed our breakfast and looked outside. Our hosts car was frozen over and gritting lorries were seen heading up the road. Our morning stroll around the shops was not as relaxed as normal as I tried to tune into the radio for updates on a pitch inspection that was due at 10 a.m.
The bad news was broken at around 1015; the match official had called it off. However, the day was not a total loss as we did meet up with some other supporters in the Innes who were happy to tag along to a match, which was taking place. This particular match was at Grant Street Park, home of Clachnacuddin F.C. who were taking on Forres Mechanics in a Highland League fixture. The match brought back memories of the Caledonian days and was the saviour of the weekend.
The real sickener was the fact the non-league side managed to get their game on whilst the 1st division side couldnt. But, as most others present on that day believe, our postponement and non-effort in clearing the pitch of snow and ice was purely tactical due to several first team players out injured. Well never know the real reason. |
