Caledonian Thistle v Queens Park (22 Jan 1997)

Another mid-week 3rd division match taking place on a Tuesday night. All quiet easy to get to really. The plan was simple. Travel to Glasgow Central on the 06:55 from Birmingham New Street, walk the short distance to Queen Street for the 11:40 departure and arrive in Inverness at something like 15:10. No problem. Even if my train arrives in Glasgow late, I could still catch the 13:40 and arrive in Inverness at 17:10. Still enough time to check in at the B&B and get to the ground for the 19:30 kick-off. Simple pimple.
Things were going great with the journey until we came to Beatock. The train came to a stand and I was thinking that it was perhaps just a signal fault and we would be on the move within a few moments. It wasnt to be. A freight train had broken down in front of us and the train I was on had to assist it to a siding at Abington to clear the line. To cut a long story short, the train did not arrive in Glasgow until around 14:00. This caused me to miss two services North and the next available one would not get me to Inverness until 19:15. As I had not pre-booked any B&B and thinking it to be unsociable to knock doors after the match, I took the decision to abort the trip and return home passing it off as just one of those days.  I got home at about 2000.
Caley won the match 1-0 too but it took an 80th min penalty from Stewartie to secure the win so it sounded like I hadnt missed much in the end.
