Richard Mafundi Lake, #079972100 Warrior Lane, #5-24Bessemer, AL 35023-7299 August 2, 2002 Revolutionary Greetings! I have been locked up since September 19, 2001. Allegedly for creating a security hazard by writng anti-american propaganda on the black board during an Islamic service. However, actually I was leading a discussion regarding reparations for Black people for our enslavement and centuries of injustices. I later learned that political activists/revolutionaries were locked up in the segregation units in prisons across the country in regards to the events of 9/11. i think the discussion of reparations was only a pretext to lock me up. I have been told that I am the only person still locked up after 9/11 out of the number of people locked up as a consequence of 9/11. I am writing people and asking them to write, and get as many other people as possible to write protest letters on my behalf to the governor of Alabama. Protest me being locked up since September 19, 2001 for participation in a discussion on reparations which was deemed anti-american propaganda. Also, protest the factd aht I slipped and fell coming from the shower with my hands cuffed behind my back. I hit my head and since that time (May 4, 2002) I have suffered blurred vision and I have a blind spot in my left eye. July 5, 2002, I suffered a minor stroke. I have been unable to get proper and adequate medical care. I have been able to see an eye doctor andI have only been given eye drops for my eyes and aspirin for my stroke! The governor's name and address is: The Honorable Donald SeigelmanGovernor of AlabamaAlabama State HouseMontgomery, AL 36130 Also write CC: at the end of the letter and send copies of the letters to the governor to the following:ACLU1400 20th Street, NW#19Washington, DC 20036 NAPHCARE950 22nd Street, NorthSuite #590Birmingham, AL 35203 Amnesty International322 Eighth AvenueNew York, NY 10001 Human Rights Watch1630 Connecticut Avenue, NW#500Washington, DC 20009 Mike Haley, CommissionerAlabama Department of Corrections101 South Union StreetMontgomery, AL 36130 The Honorable Maxine WatersUnited States RepresentativeJudiciary CommitteeU.S. House of RepresentativesWashington, DC The Honorable Charles Steele, Jr.Alabama State SenatorJudiciary CommitteeAlabama LegislatureMontgomery, AL 36130 The Honorable George PerdueAlabama State RepresentativeJudiciary CommitteeAlabama LegislatureMontgomery, AL 36130 The Honorable Alvin HolmesAlabama State RepresentativeAlabama LegislatureMontgomery, AL 36130 Steven Bullard, Warden100 Warrior LaneBessemer, AL 35023 Mafundi Defense CommitteeP.O. I have a court case in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, Birmingham, AL in regards to being locked up for discussing reparations (Lake v. Shannon, CV-01-PWG-2870-S). I contacted all the groups and individuals who are advocating reparations for support for the case but didn't receive a single response! I wish someone would mention that at the rally for reparations in Washington, DC August 17, 2002. Thanks for your revolutionary consideration and cooperation. Relentlessly, Mafundi p.s. - If anyone can send me some stamps, please do.
THE
FOLLOWING UPDATE FROM BRO. JALIL MUNTAQIM (aka A. Jalil Bottom)
WAS
FORWARDED TO SIS. MARPESSA FROM BONNIE KERNESS, AFSC,
DATED
AUGUST 20, 2002:
"On
last Saturday, I gave a presentation at the Marcus Garvey
recognition
event, apparently, the sergeant did not like what I had
to say, so
he conjured (up) three charges and had me locked in the
cell. Of
course, they have been after me since I arrived to this
prison, and
now they are making every move to have me sent back to
SHU or placed
in Admin. Seg., due to my level of influence in the
prison
population. At any rate, I've written a serious letter to the
Superintendent,
a copy of which went to Comm. Goord. Also, I am
sending a
copy to a lawyer in Rochester, who will contact Goord, and
one to NYC
to be read over the radio to put additional pressure on
DOCS. It is
time for me to be transferred from this prison!!!
Love &
struggle,
Jalil

Description
of Incident:
On August
17, 2002 at approx. 1:40 PM while supervising the Marcus
Garvey
Event at the School Building (lawn) I observed inmate Bottoms,
A. 77-A-428
approach the stage and proceeded to start a speech in
front of
approx. 75 inmates. The inmate stated, the problems with
more and
more Blacks and Hispanics are being victimized not only in
prison populations
but also in society.' The inmate went on to say
'This is a
problem and we need to fix it by unity and the voice of
one.' He
also stated, 'There is an old law dating back to slavery
days on how
inmates rights were taken away by their right to vote.'
He
continued on about a Billion Dollar class action in Florida to
reinstate
the right for an inmate to vote. He then verbally
petitioned
all inmates to take an active roll when he starts the
litigation
for a New York State class action for these same rights.
He then
stated, 'When we (the inmates) the Blacks and Hispanics get
this right
back we will change the whole political view in this
state and
across the country.' I then started to approach the stage to
inform
inmate Bottoms that he was not on the event schedule to be a
speaker at
the event. When the inmate saw me approaching the stage
he then
ended his speech and exited the stage.
