ICSA Student Awards
and Travel Fellowships
International Chinese Statistical Association

The 10th ICSA Applied Statistics Symposium will be held on June 1-3, 2000 at Embassy Suites Hotel, Piscataway, New Jersey. The Program Committee will again sponsor the Student Awards and Travel Fellowships. The main purpose of the award is to encourage student members of ICSA to participate and present their research work at this annual meeting.

Qualification: The student must be an ICSA member (or join at the time of manuscript submission), a degree candidate in any term during 2000 at an accredited institute and be able to present the work at the 2000 symposium.

Manuscripts should be prepared double spaced using Biometrics or JASA guidelines for authors. They must be 20 pages or fewer exclusive of tables and figures. Use one inch margin and no smaller than 12 point type. The work must be that of the student and be relevant to applications in a variety of fields including bio-medicine, business, etc. The manuscript could be co-authored with a faculty adviser and/or a small number of collaborators, although the student must be the first author.

Review and Selection Process : The Award Committee will review blinded copies of the submitted manuscripts based on the following criteria:

  • The manuscript should be well motivated by an application relevant to specific field(s).
  • The methodology developed should be applicable to the motivating problem.
  • Inclusion of an application of the proposed methodology to a particular study will be favorably considered.
  • Clarity of presentation in writing will be considered as well.

Up to 5 travel award winners will be selected by the Awards Committee chaired by Dr. Weichung Shih. All winners will receive a certificate, $300 for travel and other expenses, and tuition for the short courses of their choice. The winners will be notified by March 15, 2000.

Submission of Manuscripts: Manuscripts should be received and postmarked no later than January 31, 2000. The submission should include

  • A cover letter
  • One complete title page with author(s), institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone/fax numbers and e-mail address
  • Five copies of the manuscripts with only a title, no authors nor affiliatio n, on the first page.
  • Two copies of the ICSA abstract form
  • Two copies of the ICSA membership application for non-members (form can be downloaded from http://www.icsa.org)
