BAP Portraits is a great idea and I'm at a loss to understand why the secondary market didn't embrace it and why it wasn't continued. Upon opening the first pack and pulling out the very first 8x10 autograph, I was amazed. The signature portraits are printed on very nice glossy stock and are breathtaking. Even though sticker autos were used, the stickers are enormous and player autographs are large and fluid. I originally got into card collecting because I liked the photography and the signature portraits deliver in that area.
On top of the 8x10s, every pack comes with a jersey and a rookie card to keep things interesting. Neither one is really all that special though and to be honest had Upper Deck eliminated the rookies and jerseys (or even just cut them to 1 in 6 packs) and slashed the price I'd have been more than happy.
My box actually could have been better, the name power behind the 8x10 portraits isn't bad but it isn't that great either. Hedjuk, Doan, and Sullivan are all good players and have their hobby niches, but none is really a superstar. I like the Paille portrait for its Buffalo-ness, but had it been another third liner from a random team that probably wouldn't have gone over so well. The one dual portrait in the box suffered the same fate: Jokinen and Bouwmeester aren't bad hits, but they don't have that superstar appeal either.
The jerseys really delivered though. You know something must be going right when you love the first four jerseys. After Ward, Vanek, and Parise dropped out of packs a 3-colored Milan Jurcina came along to make the jerseys even better. Despite a weak finish with Brule and Meszaros, the jerseys were still a smash-hit. The rookies were largely uninteresting ... of course the Malkin rocks, but the other five are barely on the radar anymore, so they could have been better.
All this talk about my box being better and I still love this product. The 8x10 portraits are a great idea and are completely worth looking into. The names may not be huge, but there's just something about looking at an 8x10 glossy photo with a signature as big as a standard trading card that leaves me wanting more. It's a shame Upper Deck quit this idea after one year. With a few tweaks it could have been golden.
