The first ever
annual ICIHL All-Star game was a brilliant success ! In front of a jam packed Viking Center in Stockholm Sweden, the
local favorites World All-Stars rallied from a 4-2 deficit and scored 5 unanswered
goals to beat out the North-American All-Stars 7-4. It seemed that at mid-point to the game, the player of the game
award was already in St-Louis’ Keith Tkachuk’s pocket as he had already scored
the hat trick. But that was before the
World team started their terrific come back.
Milan Hejduk and crowd’s favorite Simon Gagné each scored their 2nd
goals of the game to make it a brand new game.
Then London’s Patrik Elias caught fire and scored 3 consecutive goals
for the natural hat trick !. The final
goal was scored in an empty net and the 2 Mammoths representatives (Pronger and
Gagné) assisted on the goal making it a perfect story book finish. The starting goalie for the World team,
Bratislava’s Roman Turek was also a huge contributor to the win, he stopped all
22 shots he faced in the first period to keep his team in the game. On the losing side Curtis Joseph was also
great in goals giving up only 2, but Patrick Roy was tagged for 4 goals after
he took over. Montreal’s Pavel Bure
assisted on all 3 of Tkachuk’s goals.
So in the end we
had some suspense as to whom would be named player of the game. The local Mammoths fans got what they wanted
and went absolutely crazy when the local announcer shouted :
“Sssssiiimmoooooonn Gaaaaagnnnééééé !!
“ The rookie centermen was very stunned
and couldn’t help a few tears as he
accepted the honor in front of all these screaming fans. Gagné fully deserved the honor after a 4 pts
night and he was really a dandy to watch play all game long.
Here a Gagné’s
comments : “Well I was really nervous before the game , because im just a
rookie and playing with such big names is quite impressive, plus playing here
at home I didn’t want to disappoint the fans.
But after the first couple of shifts the pressure went down and then
Milan Hejduk scored, from then on I just felt really good out there. It was a very fun game, almost as fun
watching it from the bench as the level of play was so great with all these
awesome players. It was surprising to
see just 1 goal in the first, but Turek was very solid and kept us in the
game. Then Tkachuk scored twice in like
1 minute, but they took a penalty and I managed to score on the power play,
only to see Tkachuk score again 2 minutes later. Hejduk then scored his 2nd goal late in the
period. So when we went back to the
locker room we only trailed by 1. Chris
(Pronger) then said that he really wanted to win this one for the fans here and
that we needed to come out strong in the 3rd and play like
All-Stars, and make Mr Gretzky eat his words when he said that the
North-American team would kick our butts.
So they took back to back penalties and I scored again on a 5-3 power
play after a superb pass from Jason Allison.
Then well it was all Patrik Elias, whom I think that if the game
would’ve been in London would’ve named player of the game. I really want to thank coach Stastny for
putting me on the ice when they pulled their goalie, he knew both me and Elias
were looking for our 3rd goal.
I took control of the puck in our zone and though for a second a going
for the empty net all the way down, but I saw Chris skating out toward center
ice and fed him the puck and he looked for Elias … This is a game I will remember for a long time, I really expected
Elias to be named MVP, so I really wasn’t prepared when they said my name.. It
was a very emotional moment for me.. “
