Scarecrows originated from the farmers. During the fall, the harvest is about to occur. Unfortunately, the crows like to come and eat the crops. Because of this, the farmers invented the scarecrow. The scarecrow is a dummy made of straw. It looks like a human because of its shape and clothing. This dummy was used to intimidate the crows from eating the crops. The crows were afraid of humans, and so they didn't eat in the presence of humans. Therefore, with the scarecrows hanging on a pole in the fields 24-7, the crows will not peck at the crops. This method was successful, and the dummy was named the scarecrow, because of its duty.

Scarecrows are a symbol of Halloween just because the holiday happened to occur during the same season. Someone decided to adopt the scarecrow as a Halloween symbol just for the fun of it.
