Julian is a young man from the shadow world. He has seen Jenny's brightness and beauty, and has fallen in love with her. Julian manages to trick Jenny and her friends into playing a game. To play the game, you must first construct a paper house. It warns you that you will be in great danger, and makes you swear that you are entering at your own free will. Jenny and her friends thought that it seemed a little freaky, but decided to follow the rules since it was just a silly little board game. The next thing they knew, they were sucked inside the house. In this game, each of Jenny's friends have to face their deepest, darkest nightmare. If they win, Jenny is free to go. If not, than Julian gets all their lives. Summer, one of Jenny's friends, could not face her nightmare, so she died in the shadow world. Jenny's worst nightmare happened when she was five. Her grandfather was a sorcerer and studied all sorts of weird stuff. One day while she was looking for her grandfather, she accidently wandered into the basement and opened the door that imprisoned the shadow men. Whoever frees them must accompany them into the shadow world. They were just about to capture Jenny when her grandfather appeared. He tried to stop them, but failed. In the end, he surrendered himself to the shadow men, so Jenny would be free. Jenny managed to conquer her nightmare and even created a plan. Jenny tricked Julian by promising herself to him, but instead, she trapped him inside a closet. After that, Jenny and her friends escaped from the shadow world and fell out of the house and back into reality. Just then, the two boys (Slug and P.C.) who had been following Jenny broke into her house and stole the game.

In "The Chase", Julian was freed by Slug and P.C. and was out to get them. He made them play another game. He captured Jenny's friends one by one through a vortex and transferred them into the shadow world. Jenny finally managed to find all her friends, and they were so close to escape. Zach, Jenny's cousin, was a photographer. Julian somehow managed to suck them inside one of Zach's photo. He then created a fire to trap them. Jenny and her friends decided that the fire was an illusion, just like everything else in the shadow world, and that they can go through it as long as they have courage. Most of them made it through the fire, but somehow, Zach tripped and was left behind. Tom went back to save them, but it was too late. Jenny and her friends were transferred back to Earth, while Tom and Zach were still trapped in the burning photo.

In the third book, Jenny and her friends went into the shadow world to save Tom and Zach. It turned out that Summer wasn't dead. Julian had kept her alive because he knew how important she was to Jenny. Jenny realized that Julian had a nice and vulnerable side. She tried to save him from himself. Jenny also found her grandfather's soul trapped inside an arcade game. He was suffering greatly, so she freed him and let him rest in peace. She also saved Slug and P.C.'s soul from eternal torture. Jenny and her friends finally located Tom and Zach. They won the 3rd game, so Julian had to let them go. Julian played fair, so he was willing to let them go, but he warned them to hurry up before he changed his mind. Just then, the other shadow men (Julian's elders) came. They didn't allow Jenny and her friends to leave because she had freed her grandfather's soul. They had a right to claim someone, so they wanted one of Jenny's friends to stay behind. Julian argued against this, but they threatened to kill him. All they had to do was remove Julian's name from the wood, and he'll be gone forever. In the end, Julian sacrificed himself to save them all.
