Brooms are a witch's source of transportation. As you have seen in fairy tales, when a witch wants to fly out the window, she sits on her broom, and then she's off. When they fly into the air, they tend to leave some magical dust behind. To see a witch take off on her flying journey is a magnificent sight. Some of today's modern witches, like Sabrina, use a vaccuum cleaner instead of a broom to fly. Brooms are the traditional transportation before vaccuum cleaners, shimmering, and Astro whatever (seperation of body from soul) came along.
It is also believed that a witch gets special powers on Halloween if she sweeps the floor. The sweeping motion and the tiny, magical dust particles mixed with the magic of the night allows the witches to gain more magical power. That is why this common household object that we hate, is so precious to the witches.
