Thank you very much to our JOTI 2005 sponsors:

Together with the rental of 15 computers in the Intel Computer Center in the Georgetown Branch, Penang Library, From my point of view ,it was another big success ... the statistics from the World Organisation of Scouting Movement given in the joti.org Statistics Tue, 18 Oct 2005 08:38:35 GMT stated that MALAYSIA is among the leading countries participating in JOTI 2005

Registrations by country 1. Australia 535 ; 2. Venzuela 488 ; 3. Malaysia 455

Thank you once again,

Yours sincerely,

From: "jotiorgteam" Date: Mon, 17 Oct 2005 11:24:10 -0000 Subject: [joti-announce] JOTA/JOTI 2005: another big success

Dear JOTA/JOTI helper,

the 48th JOTA/9th JOTI is over and from my point of view it was another big success. Again this year WOSM Secretary General, Dr. Eduardo Missoni, took part and so showed that JOTA/JOTI is an important event of World Scouting. Within his speech to the participants (you can read it at www.scout.org/) he pointed out that the idea of JOTA/JOTI is - as well as of the World Scout Jamboree camp - to "build friendship" and so become "an apostle...of Peace and goodwill".

From the JOTI perspective: As World JOTI Coordinator I again noticed that the number of participants in the JOTI as well as the countries where participant came from have been increased in IRC as well as in TeamSpeak. Again this year the usage of the services at joti.org have been increased:

Web Page Design:

You are welcome to submit your webpage design of the content of this JOTI @ PENANG.

The participants in the JOTA/JOTI camp in Penang could earn credit towards their Computer user Badge [ Ahli Komputer [ muka surat 31 Buku Latihan Pengakap Muda, Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia ],
Computer Badge [ Boy Scout of America ] and/or Information Technology [ Scout Association, UK ] practice, skills and knowledge award.

The requirements were discussed during the 16th August 1998 meeting in the Scout Headquarters, Penang.

Scouts and Guides could request their Computer badge and/or Information Technology badge instructors and/or testers to consider their web page design of this page for taking the badge test/examinations. This web page design is open to all Scouts and Guides.

Please email to JOTI.1998@Penang task force your web page URL.

Your web page would be linked from here. A panel of judges would review your web page design using the criteria for The Lord Baden-Powell Award For Scouting Excellence On The World-Wide-Web.

The 'Basic' Award Grant Criteria

All nominated Web-sites that are submitted for this award will be considered if they exhibit the following attributes:

1.Scouting / Guiding Related - Sites must be Boy / Girl Scouting or Guiding oriented.

2.Non-Profit - Sites must be not-for-profit efforts. Sites that seek to sell products or services can not be considered.

3.CONTENT! CONTENT! CONTENT! - Please do not nominate a site if it is still in the early stages of construction! Your Unit's name, e-mail address, and links to other people's sites just won't make it! We feel that the inclusion of extensive and / or unique content matter far outweighs elegant design style and borrowed Java Scripts.

4.Service - "Efficiency for service towards others." In the founder's words, the candidate site must provide a Guiding/Scouting-related service to their Unit members and / or families, their communities, or Scouting and Guiding in general.

5.Technical Excellence - This aspect of the award selection process will be a measure of the technical quality of the Web-site i.e. :

Is the site design pleasing to the user?

Have the site designers used graphics advantageously?

Can you read the text through the background?

Is the site well organized?

Can you navigate the site easily?

Is there anything about the site that is detracts from its 'message'?

Does the look, feel, and content make a user want to bookmark it?

Do references resolve appropriately.

Is the HTML code well written, with minimal errors?

Do 'Hyper-links' resolve as intended.

Use of Frames, Shockwave, ActiveX, and other recent technologies are neither grounds for elimination nor award. What is important though is that, when used, these tools allow a majority of users (i.e. i486+ or PPC, running IE 3+ or Netscape 3+) to successfully navigate the site.

A Final Note

All evaluations are subjective. Different people see different things that they like or dislike. Knowing this, please be assured that you are receiving a fair cross-sectional evaluation that has included the input of several EXPERTS from differing cultures, Scout/Guide Organizations, and age groups!

Let us share our best practices together.

The following article was compiled by Mr CHEW Ching Yee from the World Organisation of Scouting Movement JOTI website for the JOTI 1997 event organised by the Scout Association, Penang, Malaysia.

" In November 1996 the World Scout Committee, noting that Scouting already had a considerable presence on the Internet, and that there was already an informal and rapidly growing Jamboree on the Internet(JOTI), decided that JOTI should become an official international Scouting event, and that it should be held on the same weekend as the Jamboree On The Air.

Introduction

When Scouting was founded in 1907, the concept of Internet was far from the imagination of Scouting founder Lord Baden-Powell. So were many other aspects of Scouting today.

While society and scouting have changed over the years, Scouting fundamental principles have essentially stood the test of time and then remain universal for all Scout organizations which are members of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

Scouts around the world share much in common and Scouting encourages them to use that mutual understanding as the basic for learning about each other, making friends, and building a better and more peaceful world. The word "Jamboree" is said to have been invented by Lord Baden-Powell as a name for an event which brings Scouts together from around the world. The first World Jamboree was in 1922 and it was a remarkable historic, event bringing together some 8,000 Scouts from 34 countries.

The spirit and drive for Scouts to get together at international events have never diminished and there are hundreds of "International" Scouting events each year.

Getting together does not always require a physical presence. In 1957, the concept of the World Scout Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) was launched and it has been a popular event which today involves more than half-a-million Scouts and Girl Guides who communicate with each other on the third weekend of each October by amateur radio and related technology. In the mid 1990 the means for international electronic communication became available to virtually anyone with a computer.

Scouts have been among the first to use every technological develop-ment to "get together" electronically. The spontaneous and overwhelming involvement of scouts on the Internet is proof that it is a viable way of bringing Scouts together in ways that Lord Baden-Powell probably would have wanted to use to the fullest.

What is Internet?

Internet is the name for a group of would-wide resources. At first, it started with the collection of computer network that were developed in the 1970s. Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANet) was the first network created and sponsored by the US Department of Defense. The network was use for military purposes only. Internet is the descendant of the ARPANet.

What is client-server relationship?

Interaction between client running on different computers to use the resources in another computer and server programs running on the remote computers. Learning how to use the Internet actually means learning how to use each of the client programs. One of the special type of client/server system that is used with *UNIX system that support GUI is the X-Windows.
