What is an ideal? It's a combination of ideas, hopes and preferences which inspires and motivates us. When the ideal is attractive enough we are motivated to attain it. Our ideals represent our values; part of being human is to move toward something worthwhile, so what is really worth working for?

There is no such thing as human life without an ideal. Everyone has an ideal. Our ideal shapes and characterizes our whole life. Ideals have shaped human history, our personalities, and gives us purpose and meaning.

What are the qualities of an authentic ideal? Your ideal should be high, so you can aspire to it. It should be attainable, or you will lose heart when you can't atain it.

What are the barriers to realizing those ideals? Impatience wiht the process; letting other priorities get in the way; letting others discourage you; fear of failure to attain that goal.

How do you discover your ideal? We all have at least one, but to attain it you first need to ask yourself, "Where do my thoughts, my free time, and my money go?" The answers will likely be found in your calendar, your checkbook, and your diary or spiritual journal.

My ideal isn't what yours may be, but we should all be working onward toward realizing each one. As you work to find what your ideal is, my prayer is your will rely on God.
