Lucy's father, John Harper ran the Harpers Ferry, for which this historic place was named. Colonel JOhn Harper was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and was a special messenger for George Washington.. At this time Washington and his army need a messenger to deliver a message to Francis Marion. The route was hard and the enemy held a great portion of the territory. Wrapping the message in tin foil, Harper carried it. A few miles out of the continental lines a party for British captured him in an ambush. Hapre swallowed the tin foil so there was no evidence that he was a spy. He was then released and and came upon a nearby farn house where he took medication which made him throw up the tin foil. He then delivered the message to Marion. |
