In How to Steal a Million, Audrey portrays the daughter of a art counterfeiter, who falls for an art thief.  She starred opposite Peter O'Toole, who played the art thief. The plot is very typical for Audrey, and though she enjoyed filming, she wanted to do more meaningful projects.  So, her next film was Two for the Road.  This time she costarred with Albert Finney.  In the movie, the two play a couple that try to save their marriage, which has loss its appeal.
In this movie, art imitated life, as Audrey attempted to save her marriage.  Prior to starting to film
Two for the Road, Audrey suffered another miscarriage, and she needed a break from Mel.  The movie afforded her that opportunity, and helped her clear her mind.  But soon afterward, she started filming another movie with Mel as the producer.  This movie was Wait Until Dark, which also starred Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., Alan Arkin, and Richard Crenna.  Audrey plays a blind woman who is terrorized in her own home by criminals looking for a doll stuffed with heroin.  The plot of the movie is suspenseful, and so was  behind the scenes. Audrey and Mel's disagreements were frequent and as obvious as Mel's cheating ways.  She suffered another miscarriage, all before deciding to divorce Mel Ferrer.
By the end of 1967, Audrey had divorced Mel.  She aimed to mend her broken heart, but avoided doing any projects.  That next year, Audrey met Dr. Andrea Dotti, an Italian psychologist.  After being acquainted for several months, she and Dr. Dotti married.  There was a ten-year age difference, and the two did not have the same religion, but Audrey felt that she could make their marriage work.  They married in Switzerland, but the couple moved to Rome.
