Soon after The Children's Hour was released, Audrey's dog Famous died when running in traffic. Audrey mourned the death of her first "child", whose companionship was needed during her most trying times. Mel Ferrer gave her another Yorkie, Assam of Assam, but Audrey would never forget her friend Famous. The film after The Children's Hour was Paris When It Sizzles. It reunited her with former lover William Holden. Holden, still in love with Audrey, made filming difficult, but not totally unbearable. Audrey, though delighted with the script, felt the pressure of Holden's obsession, and she felt uncomfortable while on the set. Paris When It Sizzles did not get rave reviews, despite the entertaining subject matter. To add to the stress of Holden's obsession and critical failure, Audrey's home in Burgenstock was burglarized. As usual, she remained professional and moved on to her next movie, Charade, only days after finishing Paris When It Sizzles. Charade paired Audrey with Cary Grant, and the movie was a critical success. It had comedy, wit, and thrills, providing for a very entertaining movie. In the movie, and plays as Regina (Reggie) Lampert, who flirts throughout the movie with Cary Grant. Despite the substantial age difference between Audrey and Grant, the movie provided the perfect backdrop for romance. Audrey's calm and collected character in Charade was her total opposite at the time. She feared for her son's safety, and would often fall apart after frantically working for a period of time. After falling apart, she would start to work frantically again, in a frenzied cycle. To add to Audrey's stress, she heard of Mel's affairs. The couple were always breaking up and making up. Audrey wanted a good family life, that included a happy relationship with Mel. She worked hard to accomplish that, but it was very difficult. She and Mel were increasingly growing apart. Again, she immersed herself in work, as an outlet for her marital problems. She had her sights set on a new project that would eventually become one of her trademark roles. Sadly, her next successful film would cause problems between her and an ever vicious Hollywood. |
