Your Memory to Soothe Me

Chapter 7: Total Eclipse of the Heart

The sound of feet smashing against the pavement was heard as masses of teenagers neared the club. Voices screaming to their friends seemed right at home under the neon sign, which all the teens knew and loved simply as 'Club Summer Camp.' Part of the word summer was fading and flickering in the night as it was on its last few days before it needed to be replaced.

Peering over the cars, two arms waved in the air catching Zoe and Terry's eyes. Zoe's hand gracefully flew up in the air and waved back to the other two arms. As Terry and Zoe stepped closer to their friends, Terry could slowly make out the faces of each member of the group waiting for them in line for the club. Zoe started walking faster as she got closer to the club. Terry's cold blue eyes followed her as she almost broke out into a run but stayed in a slight speed walk.

"How was the ride?" Joe's voice called over to the two of them as they approached the main group.

Once again Zoe and Terry's hands met as Zoe grabbed his to pull him along with her. "Not bad Joe." Terry called over.

"Come on, we've got to act like we can sing." Allie chimed as her arm found itself on Joe's lower back. A small giggle could be heard as Allies child hood friend watched her forms of advancement.

"Come on." Zoe slightly gripped onto Terry's hand as they walked into the club. Her hair bounced around her head as she moved to the music that was already playing to get people to start getting in the mood. Zoe saw two tables near the front of the room for the group to sit in. The first table was in the front row where two people could sit and talk together to get to know each other better or sit together as they enjoy a cup of coffee together on their date. The second table was a few feet behind the smaller one. There were four chairs sitting around the music note shaped table "These two should be good." Zoe let her hand slide out from Terry's as she danced over to the two tables. Her jacket landed on one of the chairs at the smaller table.

Joe walked up to the larger table and placed his jacket on one of the chairs. Andy followed Joe's lead and placed his and Janet's jackets down. After pushing the chair under Allie he took a seat next to her. "I guess you two are going to be at that table. Can you handle that?"

"I've never gone on a date with the village before, so this is kind of new." Zoe smiled. Terry looked over at her at the sound of the word 'date.'

Terry's hand grabbed Zoe's arm. "Excuse us for a second." He pulled her off to the side out of the hearing range of their friends. "Zoe, is this a date?"

She did a palms up and shrugged. "How should I know? You're the guy aren't you?" Zoe's wit sent back to him.

"Do you want it to be?"

Zoe's eyes started looking around. "Come we should go sign up to sing something." Her hair flew as she spun on her heels and half ran half danced over to the DJ table. The books were open. Zoe's eye's flew down the page skimming the song choices.

Bonnie Tyler --- Total Eclipse of the Heart ---- BT2345

She grabbed a card before Terry could see what song she was signing up for. Her hand moved fast as she wrote the title, her name and the number down on the 3 by 5 index card. She quickly grabbed another one so that she could surprise Terry. As she turned the pages she saw Smells Like Teen Spirit, which was originally done by Nirvana but this one was listed as:

Tori Amos --- Smells Like Teen Spirit ---- TA8264

"So what cha gonna sing to us?" Terry asked as he started looking at one of the books.

"I think I'll do a cover of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Tori Amos." Zoe shrugged. "How bout you?"

"I donno I'll meet you back at the table." Zoe handed the DJ her card and walked back to the table. Half way there, a teenager with brown hair and ash eyes stepped in her path.

"Look who we have here. I see you can't just leave." He said to her. "The song birds back to sing."

Stepping back letting her eyes make sure it wasn't a lie in front of her. "I'll never sing to you again."

"Pretty words Jennifer." He stepped closer. "Kiss me Jennifer like you once did." He pressed closer to her. Zoe stepped back into Terry who was walking towards his friends. She turned back to see Terry standing there with the cold blue stair in his eye from the day they first met.

"Terry!"

"Zoe who's this guy?" Terry's voice deepened as he glared at the brunet in front of him. Terry's blue eyes met with the teenager's gray eyes.

"Terry, this is just a guy from my old school." She looked back at him. "Asshole this is Terry."

"Nice to meet you." Terry offered his hand. The shadow from Zoe's past firmly shook it. "Nice grip."

"Next on Stage is Zoe Startz with her own rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart. But first we have The Boy Band Boys doing Bye Bye Bye by N Sync" The DJ announced.

"So, did Jennifer tell you about how long we've been going out?" He stepped closer to Zoe and slid his arm around her.

"Get off me. Its over and you know it is." She pushed him off her. Joe, Andy, Allie and Janet started walking over.

"Sorry but I don't know a Jennifer, but if your talking about Zoe, she told me about some great guy named Tom but by the look on Zoe's face your not Tom." Terry's fist started getting tighter.

"You're probably gonna start a fight, I know this can't be right. Hey baby come on." Was heard on the stage.

A second teenager walked up to the first guy. This teenager held a buff build and tall lean body with brown hair was spiked and wire frame glasses rested on his nose. "Hey Jordan what's shaking?" the two exchanged a high five.

"The song bird won't sing any more." Jordan complained.

"What's wrong song bird?" Tom started pressing in towards her.

"Leave her alone!" Terry saw the girl talking back to Tom. The voice belonged Allie. She was standing there pushing threw the group of boys in varsity jackets. Janet was waiting for Allie to push through the teenagers since she was smart enough to go around them. Terry looked back to see Andy and Joe behind him.

'Don't Counter before you block. You're so much better then that.' Jessica's voice suddenly found its way into Terry's ears as his fist was getting ready to meet with Tom's face first hand.

"What are you going to do about it Allie?" Tom asked her.

"She's not involved with this. She's not going to do anything." Zoe spoke up. "Tom stay out of this. This is between Jordan and me. And you know what I played you for the fool you are." Zoe smiled as she said the truth. "You were strong. You were bold. But you had no brains to see it. You should have listened to your goons when they told you I was trouble because you know what I am."

"Don't really wanna make it tough, I just wanna tell you that I've had enough. It might sound crazy" the boys on stage started finishing up their song.

"And you know what." She paused lining it up with the song. "It ain't no lie. Baby bye, bye, bye." Her right hand went out in front of her mocking the hand motions in the song as she spoke the final words.

"Zoe you're just a chicken shit bitch, you know that?" Jordan said to her coldly.

Zoe smiled. "Yeah isn't it great" She turned and started walk over to the stage where the Karaoke machine was. "Oh Jordan, get of here. Your not even special enough to hear me sing to Terry or Tom."

"She's doing it." Two voices chorused as the sound of two hands hit in perfect unison.

"What's she doing?" Joe's voice said from behind Terry.

Allie smiled as she watched Zoe climb on stage. "She was called the song bird when she was on our side of the tracks."

"Song Bird?" Andy asked.

"She danced into the school in freshmen year. She was singing out load with what ever was on her CD player." Janet started explaining.

"Some guy tripped and was on the floor. In stead of walking around him she spun in mid air and then landed in this way that I've never seen her do before." Allie continued.

"She helped him up by offering him her hand to join the dance."

"The two danced down the hall before he left her on the dance floor I mean in the hallway."

"For that she was the gentle dancer." Janet paused looking up at Zoe on stage. "But then when everyone found out she was singing they called her the golden Song Bird. Then slowly just Song Bird."

"And we'll only be making it right. Cause we'll never be wrong together. We can take it to the end of the line. Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time." Zoe closed her eyes and sang with out looking at the monitor. Her palms held on to the microphone for dear life as she sang in time with the music. Her timing was pretty close to how it should have been. "I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark, we're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks. I really need you tonight"

Starring wide-eyed Terry smiled. "She's doing this. Better then I ever dreamed." He mumbled. Andy looked to his brother and remembered.

"Your favorite song Terry?"

"You know it bro." Terry watched her as she sung.

Tom watched and remembered how Zoe once sang for her. How once she would sing just for him and have a song on hand that would make everything all better. He knew how Zoe used music in everything she did, even her school work had music quotes in it. Some of the teachers didn't care but there was always one or two that hated music enough to mark her off. Then Zoe would fight to get the points back. Tom's fist clenched them self at his side.

"But now there's only love in the dark. Nothing I can say. A total eclipse of the heart." Zoe finished the song, and stepped back from the monitor. She stood there for a second longer before she placed the microphone on the small blue TV screen. She waited for the music to stop before stepping off the stage. She walked down to where her friends were standing.

A hand flew up in the air and met with Zoe's half way. Allies hand smashed against Zoe's with a loud clap. "That's the way to sing it Zoe!" Allie and Janet hugged her. Zoe looked over at Terry to see him lightly clapping and smiling. Her eyes drifted off to Tom who was now sitting down at one of the tables.

"Guys I'll be right back. I want to talk someone." She pushed though her friends and over to Tom. She took the free seat at his table. His lackey got up and left when she took the empty seat and made it her own. "Hey."

"Still the song bird I loved." He smiled over to her as she grabbed his drink. He watched her take a sip. "I still back wash ya know."

"Love the taste of back wash in the morning." She took another sip as she smiled over to her old friend. "So what have I missed while I was gone?"

"Only the standard. Half days, lunches and a water main brake. Had three day's off while they fixed the pipe and cleaned up." Tom explained. "So that your new boyfriend?" Tom asked glaring over to Terry.

Her eyes followed his glare to where her new and old friends gathered and danced. "Terry?" she paused watching Tom's nod. "He's not my boyfriend. Just a guy in my AP US 2 class."

"God Zo, that class is going to kill you!"

"Hello its AP!"

Tom grabbed the glass and looked at the lip gloss sparkle on the side of it. His eyes looked over to Zoe. "Its gotta taste good right?"

"Sick o."

"Not that! The lip gloss."

"Oh, yeah, vanilla. Would I wear anything else?"

"Last time I checked you didn't wear anything at all."

"Very Funny."

"Go off with him. You don't want to be here do you?"

"Not really."

"I'll take you out to pizza another day."

"Thanks. I'll hold you two that." She pushed her self up off the table and looked Tom. "Give me a call with the back lash of this."

"You've got it Bird." Zoe walked backwards towards her new friends. "One more thing."

"Yeah?"

"Cage's or wings?" He asked her.

"You know who I am." Zoe said to him, "give me wings. Let me fly away."

As she walked back to her new friends, Tom headed for the door. He stood there for a second looking at the candle who made the romance burn and, simply, his best friend. "You just did."
