Carreer Goals

The title
that most describes the job I am looking for is “programmer.” Above all things I want to program. It matters very little to me where exactly I
am in the programming universe as long as I am in it. Over the years I have tried to expand my
knowledge so that I can go anywhere in the field and still be comfortable. Although the term is rather abstract it still
holds the meaning. And in particular
this is the one field that technology can not phase out, only redefine.
In the
recent past I have had the ability and privledge to
work on a local robotics team. While
participating in this team I met and became friends with a mentor, who is a
programmer. After the robotics season
was over he offered me a job. I took him
up on his offer and it has helped to teach me what real world programming is
really about. He is the Project Manager
for the Checkout and Launch Control Systems project, and works for Lockheed
Martin Space Operations Company. Since the first time I was offered an
internship I have returned the following summer, and will continue to work my
summers at LMSOC. If I switch to a
permanent position after I graduate I will already have time with the company
which will also increase my starting salary.
Requirements
for Software Engineer VI at Lockheed Martin:
·
5-8 years plus a B.S., or 3-6 years plus a M.S. in Computer
Science, or equivalent degree (required)
·
C/C++ programming in a real-time environment (min. 2 years,
required)
·
Object Oriented Analysis and Design (min. 1 year, required)
·
UNIX operating system experience (min. 2 years, required)
·
Solaris operating system experience (preferred)
·
Perl and c-shell scripts (preferred)
I have been
programming for 7 years. My preferred
programming language is C++. While I worked
at Lockheed the past two summers I was exposed to Object Oriented Analysis and
Design. Furthermore, my time at Lockheed
introduced me to the Solaris Operating System, the Unix
platform, Perl, and C-Shell scripts. Thus, I would say that I have a working
understanding of the requirements of this particular position.
Academically,
I believe that I need to tune my raw skills into a more precise tool. I have the knowledge base and understanding
of the concepts. But their application
in the real world is the most important part.
Non-academically my further internships at Lockheed will provide me with
a better understanding of these real world applications.
