Big Baby Boy
by: Kristina Bennett

My husband and I were trying to get pregnant for about a year with no luck. I finally decided to go to the doctor to find out why I wasn't getting pregnant. We found out that the problem was I wasn't ovulating, so he put me on Clomid. Then, amazingly, the next month I found out I was pregnant. Our dreams had come true! We were so excited.

The beginning of the pregnancy was a little rough. I had a lot of bleeding and had to be checked all the time. After the first trimester, the pregnancy was a breeze (except for the terrible heartburn).

When I was about 8 months pregnant, the doctors did a sonogram to check to see if I still had a fibroid they thought they saw. So on September 11, 2001, I had a sonogram. We found the fibroid wasn't there and we also found out we were having a boy. My husband was so happy. He was having a son. It meant a lot to him because when I was just a few months pregnant, his father passed away from cancer. From that day on he wanted a baby boy so he could name him after his father to carry on his name. He got that wish.

During that sonogram they saw that his head was very large. They were concerned about water on the brain. So they referred me to the perinatologist. It was the longest three days in my life.

The perinatologist performed the sonogram and saw nothing wrong with my baby. The only thing he saw was that he was just a big, healthy boy. The doctor said he was already 7 pounds at 34 weeks. WOW!

Well, as any mother would say, the last weeks took forever to go by. I thought I was never going to give birth. On my last appointment, I asked the doctor if I would be able to give birth naturally. He said they were going to put me in trial labor and see what happens.

Well, just a few days later, my water broke. It was off to the hospital for us.

My labor stared at 12 a.m. and I didn't get to 10 centimeters until 10 a.m. the next day. It took me four hours to push my son out. I had no epidural so I felt every rip and tear (and I had several tears).

He was finally here, all 9 pounds, 14 ounces, 22 3/4 inches of him. That's my big boy!
