National Heritage Month Closing Events
(Iloilo City)


DAY 1: Tuesday, 30 May 2006

1) Arrival of Guests and Welcome Reception

Time : 8:00 A.M.
Venue : Ferry Boat Terminal, Muelle Loney

The Tultugan bamboo ensemble of Maasin will play music to convey Ilonggo warmth and lend a festive air in welcoming guests. Guests will be brought to their respective hotels to check-in, settle down and refresh. At about 9:30 A.M., they shall convene at the hotel lobby for refreshments, while a rondalla ensemble will regale them with Ilonggo tunes.

2) Lunch


Time : 12:00 NN
Venue : Marquez-Lim ancestral house (residence of former Senator 
                                    Anna Dominique M.L. Coseteng)

Binalaybay, composo and rondalla performances will entertain guests during lunch, after which, the guests will have an option to return to their respective hotels or go shopping at the nearby central market, or do a walking tour of Calle Real (J.M. Basa Street).

3) Jaro Walking-Tour

Time : 3:00 P.M.
Venue : Archbishop?s Residence and Javellana-Lopez, Magdalena 
                                    Jalandoni Museum, Jalandoni-Lopez Vito and Hormillosa-Locsin 
                                    ancestral houses

Guests, in groups of ten, will be guided and received simultaneously in designated
houses for a brief tour of Jaro ancestral homes.

4) Concert at the Park

Time : 3:00 P.M.
Venue : Band Stand, Plaza Rizal, Jaro

Live brass band music will perform at the plaza for the public?s entertainment,
celebrating heritage month.

5) Awarding of Prizes (Traditional Games)

Time : 5:00 P.M.
Venue : Band Stand, Plaza Rizal, Jaro

Winners of the weekend traditional games competition will be given their prizes, as part
of the closing event highlight.

6) Refreshments


Time : 5:30 P.M.
Venue : Plaza Rizal Grounds

Guests will be treated to local delicacies being peddled at the plaza.

7) Iloilo Zarzuela Performance


Time : 6:00 P.M.
Venue : Covered Court, Plaza Rizal

A glimpse of the Iloilo zarzuela, through excerpts, showcasing Ilonggo lifestyle during
the economic boom of the 1930?s, will be presented with local performers taking center
stage.

8) Dinner

Time : 8:00 P.M.
Venue : La Isabelita, Cathedral Compound

A special reception will follow the zarzuela performance for guests, artists and
production staff. The Aurora Strings and Vox Choir will provide dinner music.


Day 2: Wednesday, 31 May 2006

1) Molo Walking Tour

Time : 8:00 A.M.
Venue : Molo Church and convent, and selected old houses around it,                           
including an optional visit to the Mejica Museum, cited as NHI
landmark. Included in the tour are some elements of Chinese culture that have blended in with Ilonggo lifestyle, due to pre-spanish trade and intermarriage (Molo was known as Parian, home then, to most Chinese merchants, if not migrants). The tour ends with lunch of Molo home specialties at the convent.

2) Visits to Other Heritage Places (Optional)

Time : 11:00 A.M.
Venue : Panaderia de Molo, Iloilo Sinamay House, Avance�a house, etc.

3) Flores de Mayo


Time : 3:00 P.M.
Venue : San Jose Church, Plaza Libertad

4) Concert at the Park II


Time : 3:00 P.M.
Venue : Central Area, Plaza Libertad

A brass band will entertain the public before and after the procession.

5) Santa Cruzan

Time : 4:00 P.M.
Venue : Calle Real and Iznart Street

The procession commemorates Queen Helena?s search for the Holy Cross and caps the
month-long Flores de Mayo rites. It will take the route of the old central business district,
where existing old architectural landmarks speak of an era of prosperity that contributed
to making Iloilo a proud city in the 1950?s.

5) Mass (Optional)


Time : 5:30 P.M.
Venue : San Jose Church

Here old sacred music, from the archives of the University of San Agustin., will be
performed by the Troubadors or Vox Choir.

6) Halad

Time : 6:00P.M.
Venue : San Jose Church Fa�ade (facing the plaza)

A tribute to the Blessed Virgin, where the traditional pagdayaw in verse, complemented
by songs and dances, will be featured. Here, the final closing ceremonies will also be
held, with the reading and presentation of the expanded ordinance preserving Iloilo?s
cultural heritage.

7) Fireworks Display

Time : 6:30 P.M.
Venue : Plaza Libertad

7. Reception


Time : 7:00 P.M.
Venue : Javellana-Ledesma-Arenas Ancestral House

Ilonggo and Spanish songs will be sung.



[Workshops in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes (on church restoration and related subject) and the Canadian Urban Institute (on conservation guidelines and cataloguing) are included in the heritage month celebration. Also a recording of  Ilonggo songs are being worked out with Jose Mari Chan and local choirs ?Iloilo Children?s Choir, The Troubadors, Vox, The School for the Arts Choristers, etc, with the guidance and supervision of Prof. Vita Mallari-Jamandre, Dean, College of Music, Central Philippine University]
