Welcome to Iowa City Babe Ruth

We hope that you are as excited for the 2000 season to begin as we are. Practices will begin the week of March 27th and games will start May 1st. Regular season games will conclude by July 14th. We will also be playing some games on Saturdays and possibly Sundays this year.

Two years ago, Iowa City Babe Ruth made changes to bring parity within the leagues. We plan to continue with those changes for the current season, as they proved very successful. For the newcomers, we have two leagues - National League and American League. The National League was created as more of a developmental league. All players have the choice of trying out for the American League and National League. If they choose not to try out, they will go into a blind draft for the National League only. All players are encouraged to try out, no matter which league they want to play in, to allow coaches a fair chance of assessing skills and placement. You must attend tryouts to be selected for the American League. Trying out for the American League does not guarantee placement in the American League. Players who played in the American League last year DO NOT have to try-out again, you should be on the same team. National League players who would like to try-out for the American League MUST attend the try-outs.

Iowa City Babe Ruth has scheduled a winter baseball clinic on February 27th from 9:30am to 11:00am at the City High Gym. The clinic is open to All Babe Ruth Players that will be playing Babe Ruth Baseball in Iowa City this year. You are to show up at the gym with your glove and clean tennis shoes. So that we have a count on the number of players coming please e-mail Roy Browning at [email protected] or call 338-2358 and leave a message. We need to know the players name and age.

To be drafted into the American League, a player MUST attend the tryout session on Saturday, March 25th beginning at 10:00 a.m. You will be notified of the time you are to attend. In case of rain out, tryouts will be held on Sunday, March 26th beginning at 12:00 noon.

As a volunteer organization, we would welcome your assistance as a coach, assistant coach, scorekeeper, concession sales, etc. If you are interested in coaching or would like more information please contact any Babe Ruth Board member. If you would be willing to help in any other area, please make note on the registration form. This year we need 6 additional managers for the National League; if you can help please contact Randy Willman 351-3689.

Field #3 should be available by the beginning of the 2000 Babe Ruth baseball season. This should allow us to schedule 25-30 games per team for the season.

A project is underway to build a new concession stand, storage and press box complex. A separate fund has been set up to collect monies which will be used toward this project. Any donations to this fund will be greatly appreciated. A funding drive is underway, we would like to start construction after the season this year.

Iowa has been given the privilege of hosting the 10 and under Regional Tournament. It will be played at Bobby Oldis Fields at City Park in Iowa City. Check-in for the tournament is Friday, July 28, and games run through Wednesday, August 2.

If you have any questions or concerns during the course of the season, please feel free to talk to your player's coach or contact any Board member. We welcome your feedback and look forward to a successful season.

This year Iowa City has been made its own district. We are now District 8 and have been pulled out of District 4. This has several benefits for Iowa City. First with the redrawing of boundary lines now players living in Hills and going to Iowa City Schools will be eligible to play in Iowa City. Help get the word out to these players. Second we will be sending All Star teams to the State Tournaments in all three age brackets. This redrawing of the district lines will help both Iowa City and the other towns that make up District 4.

More new and exciting things to come. Coaches will be informed and also information will appear on the web site.
