Muddy Peak is one place you just got to visit during the winter months.  Muddy Peak is 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas.  A challenging hike that will require nerves of steel when ascending and descending the third class mountain walls of Muddy Peak.  I reported this hike previously.  With the recent rains of February 2005 the dirt roads out to Muddy Peak has made  travel very difficult.  Definitely a high clearance vehicle, 2wd might be fine, although a few spots we did have to throw it into 4wd to clear a wash that now runs through the road.  Although it was a struggle to get through we did finally make our arrival at the parking lot at the trail head.  The wooden post that line the enterance seem a little worn/deteriorated since the last visit. 2/17/2003.
You ascend from the parking lot to a pass that allow you to drop into Hidden Valley.  Other than a old dirt road that is now resticted, Hidden Valley is prestine and tranquil. You never know what you will find in this area.  I was greatful that Courtney's previous hiking experience of this area.  He showed us some beautiful sandstone formations that contain two hidden pools of water.  Wow, I wouldn't have thought there were there.
