1) One name for Shavuot is the Festival of the Giving of the Tora. Jews all over the world believe that this is the day when God gave the Tora to the Children of Israel on Mount Sinai. 2) In biblical times, Shavuot was celebrated at harvest time, so Shavuot is also called the Harvest Festival. 3) Betweeen Shavuot and Succot people used to bring their first fruits from the seven species to the Temple in Jerusalem, so another name for Shavuot is the Festival of the First Fruits. 4) Shavuot is celebrated exactly fifty days after passover, so this holiday is also called the Fiftieth Day. |
