This is perhaps the first comprehensive work on the subject. In his
lengthy introduction the learned author describes the scope and extent
of the work, including the various complex terms used for navigation, navigators,
sea voyages, boats and ships, ports and coasts, Arabic words used in navigation,
adaptation of foreign words from Persian, Hindi, Chinese, Greek, Latin,
etc.
The subject proper, viz. Navigation of the Arabs, is then dealt with
under the headings: in the days of the Holy Prophet; during the reign of
the Umayyads and Abbasids; Navigable routes of the East; the Fatimids in
the Mediterranean Sea; Sealore: literary investigations of Arab navigators;
equipment and implements for navigation; shipbuilding yards; the decline
of Arab navigation; literature on navigation.
