As the 2002-2003 school year comes to an end, the senior class prepares to leave the reef for uncharted waters while the freshman, sophomore, and junior IBIS students get ready for a relaxing summerNOT!
Obviously, stress from the school year and summer homework are not enough to keep some incoming tenth through twelfth graders from taking advantage of the county's newly widened summer acceleration program, Dual Enrollment.
Although Dual Enrollment has always been offered, this year Miami-Dade Community College and Florida International University have made a point to offer their courses to all students who wish to accelerate academically and meet their requirements.
The requirements, such as having a 3.0 unweighted GPA and passing all required placement tests, make the IB student body a more than perfect source of candidates for this opportunity to take more challenging, college-credit courses.
The ambitious Jessica Menasce, currently an IB freshman, will be taking AP Statistics this summer. "I hope to enhance my educational rsum and to raise my GPA," Jessica says, "it looks really good for college."
Jessica, along with many others, will be taking her class during the second six weeks from June 23 to July 30. Most students find the second six-week period more practical and easier on their school schedules than the twelve week period, in which they would take night classes during the end of the school year.
"I really want to take physics, so I was very happy to find out that it was offered during the second six weeks." said Melissa Patterer, 10th IB.
Whether it is statistics, physics, or any other class, IBIS students continuously challenge themselves and strive to be the best they can possibly be.
Enjoy your summer, and see you back at the Reef before you know it!
