Edison went completely deaf  at the age of twelve because he was pulled up to a train car by his ears.
Edison began his career as an inventor in Newark, Jersey with the Automatic Repeater.
One invention first gained him fame      was the Phonograph in 1877.
The Phonograph patent, was unprecedented as the first device to RECORD SOUND AND REPRODUCE SOUND!!!
Was he the first man of Sound?
He then became involved in motion picture and made his first silent movie "The great Train Robbery." which only lasts about ten minutes.

In 1877/1878 he invented the carbon microphone used in all telephones today along with the Bell receiver in the 1880's.  Rumors had it that Edison was very jealous of Alexendar Graham Bell when he beat Edison to the punch inventing the Telephone:-)
