The Cook and the Beard Family
The two families were from the same area, and were related. Although
there is some speculation that there is an error, James Cook (1774-1860)
was married to Susan, (1784-1873) who was supposedly a Beard.
There is some evidence is that her name was Susan Appelby.
Their son John Cook (1815-1891) married Sarah Beard (1823-1893).
As well, it may be that there were other intermarriages, as it is suggested
that another Cook and Beard marriage took place in this generation.
All that aside the two families came on the same ship.
We know they came through Holland Landing, Lake Simcoe and Orillia.
The two families settled in Medonte.
Apparently, Susan Cook stayed in England until the following year.
The text of an agreement registered in Essex England is as follows.
An Agreement for £315., to relinquish a Lease
Susan Cook, W. and agent of James Cook, late of Boxted, husbandman (now in North America), to Sarah Goose, wid.
Cottage and land in Boxted
Recites that Susan C. is about to join her husband in N. America and that 5 years of the Lease remain unexpired
James Cook lived on lot 2 Concession 10 Medonte.
Later, John and Sarah lived on Lot 2 Conc. 10, according to the records. It
must be noted that in the 1960's an error was discovered, and the original
Beard farm at Lot 2 Conc 10 was in the Cook name.
The correction was made in the 1960's.
Both families have a long association with St. George's Fairvalley.
The original church bell was donated by the Cook family.
It is now mounted on a stand in the church yard.
Many of the families are buried at St. George's.
