TOBY'S CANNED DOG FOOD COOKIES

2 cans dog food
Old fashioned rolled oats
slippery elm powder (optional)

In a large bowl mix two cans of dog food and 2 and 1/2 to 3 cups of plain, rolled oats. (It doesn't seem to matter what flavor dog food- I have used Science Diet d/d and IVD venison and potato) Squish this together thoroughly. The mixture will seem dry. After it is thoroughly mixed, use a non-stick cookie sheet or coat a cookie sheet with oil. Canola or olive is what I use. Form the treats into tiny little balls like little meatballs. If you need to, moisten your hands to make the mixture stick together. Don't add too much moisture to the mix itself. When the cookie sheet is full, pat the tops of the treats down, so that they are no longer rounded on top. Sometimes I lightly dust the meatballs with slippery elm powder. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. After all the mini-meatballs are made, make sure the oven is empty. Turn up the oven to 500 degrees for about 5 minutes, until it is good and hot. Spread all the meatballs out on a flat surface (cookie sheets), so that air can circulate around them. Turn the oven off. Put the treats in and forget about them for several hours or overnight. They will get more dry and hard this way and keep longer. I freeze mine and leave about a week's worth in the treat jar. They don't get moldy or stale as long as they go through the drying process at the end. The entire preparation time is about 30 minutes. It takes some time to shape the meatballs.

This is only for dogs who can digest oatmeal. If I had a dog who could only digest potatoes, I would substitute plain mashed potatoes and add them in. I am going to mix pumpkin in the next time and see what happens.
