| On Thursday 20th November on RTHK Radio 3's morning programme "Backchat" Graham Ranger (Acting Senior Education Officer), Mary Peart (Head of GSIS International stream) and Nury Vittachi (FACE: Families Against Cuts in Education( were on air to answer questions from parents and have a discussion about IB. It should be noted that definitely two of the calls made by parents supporting IB were actually set up by Graham Ranger and so the programme was not unbiased. The three most interesting questions asked by a caller in the last few minutes of the programme exposed certain details which the ESF had not informed parents about. Two of these questions and Graham's answers were: 1) Why is the ESF had not presented parents with a balanced viewpoint about IB? Graham said that they had not gone over the current views on A-level because there was no need as the parents already knew the system as their children were going through it. He failed to really answer the question of the ESF's lack of balanced information as those that have received ESF information on the IB will note that there were no criticisms or 'weak points' of IB given, only those of A-levels. 2) Almost 100% of teachers in one ESF school were against the IB and yet we were not being told the teachers opinions, why is it that the teachers are so against it? Graham, in summary, said that if the teachers were 100% against it then they would not change to the IB system and that the ESF were sending out a survey and asking for detailed teacher's opinions on the subject of which they will review and present. One caller also suggested that the impression he was getting was that ESF had already made up their minds and that consulting the parents was just for show, this was denied by Graham. There were also positive opinions which we are sure some were not set up by Graham, these reflected the same information that the ESF has already presented and hence we will not repeat again. Please however feel free to listen to the broadcast which can be downloaded below so as you can hear all the opinions shared. |
