RUNNING AWAY VERSES

Ilona Bastos

Doorway of Dreams by Deborah Richardson

.

How fast they fly away from me

Those poetic words

Murmured in the night

(continuous whispers

among restless dreams).

.

I say and repeat those lines,

Afraid to lose them.

Their rhymes I retain,

Details I remember,

As a prayer not to be forgotten.

.

Morning comes and I’m alone.

What of that chant has remained?

Vague feelings of an abandoned litany

Lost in the darkness,

Scattered in the wind…

.

Nothing is left! All is gone

Except for this sad trace

Of what I thought had found

But ran away from my lips

With the breath of the dawn.
