Buddhists differ from Brahmans because�
For Buddhists, rituals are outward and they don�t lead to salvation
Brahmans kill animals, but Buddhists don�t: humans sometimes slip into animal existence

There are five precepts of Buddhism
They are equivalent to the 10 Commandments of Catholicism
1. Don�t kill
2. Don�t kill
3. Don�t lie
4. Don�t use sexual deeds in the wrong way
5. Don�t engage in drinking or drugs

Karma
The idea that fate comes from past actions
A system of cause and affect
Existence is a privilege
Only humans can ascend to nirvana

Mediation
There are four major things involved�
1. loving
2. kindness
3. compassion
4. joy
Helps people see things �how they really are�

Reincarnation
Good/bad deeds are transferred to new life
Appearance, talents, and qualities also carry through
Nirvana is limited to a certain amount of time, and then the person is reborn

Mahayana
A new type of Buddhism
Lotus flower: a symbol of purity in life amidst an unclean world
  Lotus Sutra
Lama=High Priest
  Dali Lama

Death in Buddhism
Dying people take form of their traits
Death is gradual, often lasting form 7-10 days
Ensures a safe passage
Judo = pure land, Buddha land
  Good for achieving Nirvana
  Simple, direct and methodic

Zen Buddhism
Western
Prominent religion of the Samurai
Goal: to seal into one�s nature as a human being
Very free and spontaneous
�Every action is a Buddhist action�
