INTERNATIONAL WOMAN'S DAY THURSDAY, MARCH 8th
IAWC International Women's Day
Thursday, March 8th
Altadonna Restaurant
249-30 Horace Harding Expressway Little Neck, NY 11362 off of the L.I.E.
East near Marathon Pkwy
The occasion marks the IAWCs 9th annual celebration of la Festa della Donna, a holiday celebrated worldwide, connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. IWD celebrates the collective power of women: past, present and future. The observance began in the early 1900s with the suffragette movement, in response to the inequality experienced by women. The first celebration took place in 1911, after the tragic Triangle Fire in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. The disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labor law legislation in the United States and in many parts of the western world and became a focus of subsequent IWD events. Womens campaign for 'Bread and Roses' was also inaugurated at the time.
Since 1975, the United Nations has held an annual IWD conference to honor the contributions of women around the world, and March 8th has been designated by many womens organizations and governments as International Womens Day. Although many countries hold large scale events that honor womens advancement to ensure that womens equality is respected as a natural aspect of human dignity, these advancements as we are well aware, are not global. Many women suffer under extreme conditions both in the workplace and within their society. Lets unite to celebrate IWD together, to remember the past, and to look forward to the future. Our hope is that the voices that resonate with the poem Bread and Roses by James Oppenheim, recited annually at our celebration, will be heard in every corner of the world.
While we commemorate, the evening will provide us with another splendid opportunity to socialize, sing Italian songs, laugh and have fun. Who knows better than Italian American women that caring for family requires an occasional timeout to enjoy an evening of relaxation and enjoyment with friends!

April Book Club Selected Reading
THE VALCANO LOVER by Susan Sontag
Set in 18th century Naples, the novel is based on the famous love triangle of Sir William Hamilton, his celebrated wife Emma, and Lord Nelson, and is peopled with many of the great figures of the day. This unconventional historical romance touches on themes of sex and revolution, the fate of nature, art and the collectors obsessions, and, above all, loves. Publishers review
♥BOOKS AND WRITERS>>>>
On the bohemian New York scene of the early sixties, Sontag swiftly acquired a reputation as the radical-liberal American woman, who had not only deep knowledge of ancient and modern European culture, but could also reinterpret it from the American point of view.
♥LONGITUDE BOOKS>>>>> A steamy and evocative historical novel by social critic Sontag, set primarily in 18th-century Naples. The sweeping story focuses on the British Ambassador to the King in Naples, his passionate and notorious love, and her infatuation with Lord Nelson. It's all a bit much, but the history, and Naples, are very nicely evoked. (The title refers to the Ambassador's explorations of Mount Vesuvius.) (ITL143, $14.00)

Book Club Selection:
BOSTON, A Documentary Novel
by Upton Sinclair (b. Sept. 20, 1878 d. Nov. 25, 1968)
Published in 1928, only one year in the aftermath of the turmoil of the Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti case, this book is considered by literary historians, the most comprehensive illustration of the political climate and the society which governed Boston at the time of the trial. It is a must read by all Italian Americans who want to learn more about the conditions and dissension their Italian immigrant grandparents lived through. Upton Sinclair was an investigative journalist and author of over 90 books. He was an advocate of socialism, and supported anarchist causes. His book Boston stirred tremendous controversy when he proclaimed Sacco and Vanzetti as innocent of the crime in which they were committed, and for which they were unjustly executed.
He explains in detail the trial, the sentiments of the upper class and their fear of socialism and the climate of anarchy, the disenchantment and the dream of the labor class for better working conditions and a fair share of company profits.

November Book Club Selected Reading
THEIR OTHER SIDE, SIX AMERICAN WOMEN & THE LURE OF ITALY by Helen Barolini
Author, essayist, critic and poet, Helen Barolini profiles six gifted American women who were lured by the mythical appeal of Italy. She takes us along on their journey of self-discovery and transformation.
Among these notables, Helen Barolini embarks on the first journey with author, Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) who traveled to Europe as a foreign correspondent for the Tribune in 1846. When she arrived in Italy in 1847, she became involved with Il Risorgimento, fell in love with the Marchese Giovanni Angelo dOssoli, and gave birth to their child Angelo. Disaster strikes Margaret and her family on their trip back to America in May 1850 when the family drowned off the coast of Fire Island, New York after the ship ran aground.
Helen Barolinis second essay studies the lure felt by the Belle of Amherst Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), who unlike Margaret Fuller never left Amherst, Massachusetts, except for an occasional trip within the New England states. Despite her seclusion in her last years, Emily traveled to Italy through her minds eye, and wrote about the warmth and beauty of the Italian country side. Like her invisible lover, which in her poetry poses the mysteries of love, her exploration to far away Italy adds a mystical dimension of nature and pilgrimage to the power of the poetry composed by an American girl who has become now immortalized and adored through her poems.

The Book Club will discuss the life of Maria Montessori
The following books are recommended reading.
Book Club Selections:
A Biography of Maria Montessori by Rita Kramer
Maria Montessori (18701952) brought about a revolution in the classroom. She developed a method of teaching small children and inspired a movement that carried that method into every corner of the world. In her rich and forthright biography, Rita Kramer brings this powerful woman to life, illuminating not only her lasting contributions to child development and social reform, but also the controversies surrounding her training methods and private life.
Maria Montessori, Her Life and Work by E.M. Standing.
The first woman to win a degree as a Doctor of Medicine in Italy in 1896, Maria Montessori's mission to improve children's education began in the slums of Rome in 1907, and continued throughout her lifetime. Her insights into the minds of children led her to develop prepared environments and other tools and devices that have come to characterize Montessori education today. Her influence in other countries has been profound and many of her teaching methods have been adopted by educators generally. Part biography and part exposition of her ideas, this engaging book reveals through her letters and personal diaries Maria Montessori's humility and delight in the success of her educational experiments and is an ideal introduction to the principals and practices of the greatest educational pioneer of the 20th century.
Mammolina: A Story about Maria Montessori by Barbara O'Connor
(For ages 8 11 years)
This childrens book describes the life and achievements of the Italian woman doctor who developed a revolutionary method of educating children. The author portrays Mammolina as being independent and dedicated to her work, but not as being strong-willed and dictatorial, as other biographers have suggested. Appended with a schedule of a typical Montessori school day and a bibliography, this will be a welcome addition to the biography shelf and useful for units on notable women.
