The ETRUSCAN region
September 28 & 29, 2002
Cerveteri * Tarquinia * Vetralla
Located approximately 30 miles NW of Rome, Etruria is an area with many expansive necropolis
filled with frescoed tombs from the latter half of the 6th Century BC.
Buried under mounds, are chambers where the Etruscan entombed their dead. The walls
and ceilings are covered with paintings depicting Etruscan life.
Come and join us this month as we travel by car for an overnight in Vetralla!
Details of our trip to Etruria

The International Archaeological Society's tour of the Etrurian region, will begin Saturday, September 28, 2002 around 1000,
and will end on Sunday, September 29, 2002 at approximately 1300.

A fee will be collected to cover our guide and entry expenses at the pre-trip briefing. 15 Euro for members and 25 Euro for non-members.

The IAS has booked a block of rooms at Hotel Da Benedetta for the night of September 28, 2002.
The cost per person for our IAS NATO - Naples group is 48 Euro per person. The 'mezza pensione' includes breakfast and dinner
on Saturday evening at a local restaurant nearby. When making reservations, be sure to specify that you are with the IAS NATO - Naples
It will be the individuals' responsibility to make their own hotel reservations and payments.

Saturday, September 28
The group will meet at the Cerveteri necropolis at approximately 10 o'clock am.
Take A1 north to Rome. As you approach Rome, follow the Fiumicino/Civitavecchia (A12) direction. Take the Cerveteri exit.
The necropolis is located approximately 2 km from the town. Look for signs. Your visit to the necropolis is at your own pace.
We will depart Cerveteri at about 12 o'clock pm for Tarquinia located approximately 45 km north.
It is imperative that we meet our guide and hostess, Dr. Mary Jane Cryan, at 12:45 pm sharp in front of the Archaeological Museum, Piazza Cavour.
Dr. Cryan, a local historian and author, will accompany us on a visit of the highlights of the Museum. The tour will continue with a visit to the
painted frescoes of Etruscan tombs located outside of Tarquinia.
Arrive in Vetralla and check into hotel Da Benedetta, a newly opened 3-star hotel. Hidden away in a quiet residential zone of Vetralla,
it is connected to the family-run restaurant that is an institution in the area. There are 11 rooms - double, triple and even a single room.
After a day of driving and touring, it will be a pleasure to leave the car at the hotel and walk to the nearby restaurant to enjoy dinner (primo, secondo, contorno, acqua)
that is included in the mezza pensione price. Wine, coffee, sweets are extra. The restaurant�s specialities include fettuccini con funghi
porcini (it�s the season!), rabbit, wild boar, roast potatoes.
After dinner, we will stroll through the medieval section of Vetralla to Mary Jane�s palazzo and enjoy a nightcap at her invitation, before returning to Da Benedetta�s hotel.


Sunday, September 29
After breakfast, check out of our hotel and meet in the lobby at 10 o'clock am.
Following a group visit to the mysterious site of Grotta Porcina near Vetralla, the IAS tour will be concluded and you are on your own to continue exploring the area. See additional notes below.
NOTE: If you wish, you may arrive on Friday, September 27, 2002 and enjoy the area prior to joining the IAS NATO - Naples tour the next day.

visit the Terme dei Papi hot thermal baths where Michelangelo, popes, and others have come to swim and �take the cures� (cost about 10 euro entrance)
- walk through the Castel d�Asso necropolis near the thermal baths
- trek through the rock tombs of Norchia near Vetralla (only for the hardy)
- drive to Viterbo, then stroll through the San Pellegrino quarter, Europe�s best preserved medieval center. Visit the Papal Palace
and the newly opened Museo del Colle.
