| Howdy! My name is Ian Griffiths and I'm currently in my third year of a B.A.H. in Politics and Development Studies at Queen's University in Canada. If you happen to already know me, you will probably find this section quite boring. I was born in Calgary but lived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1992-2000, when I graduated from the International School of Kuala Lumpur. I travelled quite a bit around Southeast Asia while I lived in Malaysia, and I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Cuba last summer because of a course I was taking jointly between my university and the University of Havana. This year I am both the Site Director for Bolivia and the Kingston Projects co-manager for QPID. I'm extremely passionate about issues of international development and globalization. I would love to work in the field of development as a career some day. However, in the past year I have discovered, especially through my involvement with QPID, that I can make the greatest impact on the lives of people in the developing world from right here at home in the developed world. By educating people around me about some of the causes of the great divide between the rich and the poor on this planet, we can support a movement that will influence our governments to change their foreign and trade policy, which has a tremendous impact on people in the developing world. Nonetheless, I am very excited about the projects I will be working on in Bolivia, and my knowledge about QPID's past projects makes me confident that what I will be doing will be valuable and worthwhile, so long as I am sensitive to the needs and the culture of the people with which I am collaborating. |
