Sunday 25th May 2008 - Buttermere Round Challenge
8 walkers came (4 females and 4 males blimey!) and we all met at Buttermere at 10am. It is a special walk and not part of the Walk Programme and it is printed overleaf of the A Group Walk. The weather was fantastic and we could see every peak in the Lakes. But it was very very windy, really too windy. Ian Funnell had his expensive hat blown away and lost it over the cliff! He was so annoyed and one or two were laughing at him! The walk was 15 miles long and a total of ascent 7,000 feet and that proved to be very difficult and very strenuous as we first experienced it. Harder than the three peaks walk in Yorkshire Dales last year. Due to setting off rather late at 10.30am, we could not make it a full round. We had to cut short after Haystacks via Honister Pass down to Warnscale Bottom and walk along the bank of Buttermere and finally to car park. The view of the lake as we walked along was very beautiful to look at and we would never forget it. After a few miles, Elaine Butterworth (it sounds better than Buttermere!) hurt her left knee by twisting. She bravely walked unaided the half way round and descended to Honister Pass road. She then walked alone all the way back down to the car park without catching a bus a total of 7 miles! Well done!! We hoped that she would make a full recovery to her knee and we look forward to having her back with us very soon. We will try it again to make a completed Buttermere Round in future and that would mean setting off walk very early in the morning at about 7.30am.
