Early Celtic art encompasses religious depictions and symbols. These were represented by the seven created beings of the Celtic World:

Plants
Insects
Fish
Reptiles
Birds
Mammals
Man

The artist's representation of these creatures are highly stylized - verging on abstract. Creating images that intertwine intricately, Celtic artwork eventually develped into knotwork designed which were known as the Thread of Life. Interlaced knotwork patterns with their unbroken lines symbolized the process of Man's eternal spiritual growth, Key patterns, spirals and zoomorphic ornaments follow in this tradition of rebirth and continued growth.
