The A.T. and Me
GA-ME 2003

  Katahdin!!

I did it!

2,173 miles in 4 months...to the day.

This has been an awesome, amazing, sometimes strange journey.
I now have to redefine "walking distance," but I have achieved something very great...at least personally.
Thanks you so much to everyone who helped me, prayed for me and encouraged me along the way.  I could not have done it without you!!
As for the final bit of the journey...
Maine was beautiful.  It reminded me more and more of home every day I walked through.  I had a zillion awesome experiences...not he least of which was a rather death defying encounter witha  moose...well, maybe i'm being a little dramatic, but hey...check out the story to the left :)
So, I am staying here in Maine for 5 days with some other hikers here in a cabin on a lake.  I have a fantastic view of Katahdin.  It's a great way to transition back to "reality."
I look forward to seeing each and every one of you soon.
Take care and be blessed,

Anish and the Big, Bad Moose
So, I was tired of walking one night in the 100 mile wilderness of Maine.  So I threw my sleeping bag down along the trail and went to sleep.  Sometime in the darkness of night I heard a strange grunting noise.  At first I tried to ignore it, but it just became louder and more insistant.  So finally I poked my head out of my sleeping bag. I put my glasses on, but one of the lenses fell out.  So lying on my stomach, half blind in the middle of the Maine woods I could just discern  by the light of a rising full moon the form of a humongous moose looming above me.
I froze and there was a 25 second stand-off between a territorial Maine Moose and a half blind AT Thru-hiker.  Then the moose spooked and dashed a short distance away.  There he continued to indicate I should leave.
I leaped to my feet and hurriedly tried to extricate myself from my mummy sack.  Once free I stood shaking while making a cursory overview of the situation.  I decided I wouldn't be able to sleep there.  So I threw all of my things into my pack and headed up the mountain...in the dark...with a squeeze light that illuminates approximately 1 square foot of trail.  1 mile later I threw down my bag on top of the exposed rock of a mountain and tried to sleep.  It was a very cold night in the wind...not to mention another moose came galloping by a few hours later.  Not much sleep, but a great story.
The moral:  Never, ever sleep alongside the AT..its a moose superhighway!!
Check out www.appalachiantrail.org   for facts and other assorted info
about the trail.  And don't forget to say hi in my guestbook at the bottom.  The weather link will give you an idea of the hiking conditions as well!
