| End of the Road, part 1 by IamBoris |
| This three-part series finale begins with the Sliders and Kryptus Tenaren arriving on the KroMagg-occupied Earth 159 after having dropped Geiger off on Home World. Colin scans the area using his tracer (obtained at the end of Associations), butnot surprisinglythe device does not detect his brothers presence (after all, what are the odds that hed find his brother on one of the very next worlds?). That done, the group heads, as usual, to the Dominion Hotel to plan their next move. The six of them decide that Tenaren should do some undercover work in the local KroMagg garrison before they go storming in looking for their friends. For instance, knowing exactly what cell block and cell theyre in could help. So, Tenaren goes off to do so. We periodically switch back and forth between Tenaren at the garrison and the Sliders waiting and worrying at the Dominion. After a few hours, Tenaren returns and delivers the news that their friends have been transferred to a garrison on another world that refused to obey Karaggs surrender order. The KroMaggs here must have suspected that the Sliders had something to do with the change in leadership and the end of the war and known that Karagg would supply them with the coordinates of this world. But what these Maggs apparently didnt expect was that Karagg would send a KroMagg along with the Sliders to this world. Anyway, they now have to go to Earth 113, the coordinates of which Tenaren was able to obtain from the garrisons computer. As they have several hours before the slide, the group takes the time to just relax, learn a bit about this worlds culture and its progress in the war against the Dynasty, and speculate about their chances against the remaining KroMaggs now that the Maggs will not have any reinforcements or new supplies coming from the homeworld. Eventually, talk of this world shifts to talk of the past; Tenaren is curious as to the Sliders experiences in traveling the multiverse. They tell their story, then ask Tenaren to tell his. He does (for the story, go here). When the time for the slide finally arrives, the Professor, Remmy, Colin, Logan, Wade, and Tenaren slide to Earth 113, anxious to be able to finally free Maggie, Dianna, and Mallory. We shift to the KroMagg prison on Earth 113. After spending months trying to figure out how to escape alone, all attempts have failedapparently the Maggs actually do learn from stupid mistakes of the pastand the three imprisoned Sliders are now doomed to die. When a group of seven heavily-armed KroMagg guards remove the three imprisoned Sliders from their respective solitary-confinement cells, it is the first time they have seen each other since their escape attempt three months ago (in 'Prisoners of War'). There is flash of relief on each of their faces when they first see the others, but that look is quickly replaced by one of dread over knowledge that they are about to die. They are not in good shape; they havent eaten well, they havent seen light in months, and their minds are screwed up from spending so much time alone and from continually enduring KroMagg mind games (plus, for claustrophobic Dianna, the confined space of solitary-confinement was like Hell). Once all three are collected, the guards escort them into a corridor that leads to the small outdoor courtyard where the firing squad will execute them. As theyre being lead down that corridor, they suddenly hear someone shout, Down! In spite of their emaciated, disconcerted condition, the prisoners obey the order, and after a brief firefight, all seven KroMaggs are shot dead. Maggie looks up to see, to her great surprise and relief, Remmy, Colin, Wade, and the Professor. The four of them are joined by a woman and a KroMaggwho appears to be working with them!and all six are toting heavy energy weapons of some kind. Dianna recognizes Rembrandt and sort of recognizes Wade, but in a where-have-I-seen-her-before kind of way (she saw her in Requiem, by the way). Mallory also easily recognizes Remmy, but he also recognizes (though more vaguely) Colin, Wade, the Professor, and Logan because (if youll recall from 'Prisoners of War') Quinns memory and personality have resurfaced. All three rescued prisoners are not sure whether what theyre seeing is real or some sort of sick KroMagg mind trick or hallucination, but just to be sure, all three begin to ask whats happening. But theyre cut-off mid-sentence by Arturo, who says, No time! and opens the vortex. Confused but relieved, the rescued follow their rescuers into the vortex. TO BE CONTINUED (on to part 2). . . |
