“Planning the unexpected
”
Scene 1
Begins a few weeks later, Carter and Abby are lying in bed together planning their Wedding.
Carter: (Leaning over Abby and grabbing a pen and note pad off the night stand next to her side of the bed) Ok let’s start. When do you want to get married?
Abby: (Looking over at Carter) Huh?
Carter: (Rolling over in the bed to face Abby) Are you all right, you look a little pale this morning?
Abby: I'll be fine. (Sitting up slowly) How about in May?
Carter: That's only a few weeks away.
Abby: (Smiling over at Carter cheekily) I know.
Carter: (Smiles back at Abby) What time does your shift start?
Abby: (Looking over at the clock) Oh shit, I've got to be there in ten minutes.
Carter: I can call in and tell her you’re not feeling well.
Abby: (Getting off the bed and grabbing a sheet to put around herself) Nah I'd better go in. I want to ask her for time off for our honeymoon today.
Carter: I'm not on 'till 9. So I'll see you then.
Abby: Ok (Leans over and kisses Carter on the forehead) I'll let you get back to sleep then.
Carter: (Watches Abby as she walks out of the room)
Scene 2
It's 7am and Abby has been at work for an hour now. She's just finishing up with a patient when she starts to feel like she is going to be sick.
Abby: (Picking the chart off the end of the bed) Excuse me Mr. McGill
Mr. McGill: (Nods) Ok dear.
Abby: (Walks off past the desk and drops the chart on the desk on the way past)
Chuney: (Walking up to the desk with a chart) Can you get Mrs. Rodney a new Catheter?
Abby: (Starting to walk off) In a sec.
Chuny: (Looking at Abby worriedly) Are you all right?
Abby: (Continuing to walk off) Yeah fine. Just a little light headed. (Walks into the ladies toilet and into a cubicle. She bends down over the toilet and vomits. Then she comes out of the cubicle and walks over to the sick where she turns the tap on and splashes water over her face).
Scene 3
Susan is walking past Chuney and her patient on the way to the Doctors Lounge looking for Abby.
Susan: Have you seen Abby anywhere? Kerry was looking for her.
Chuney: I think she's in the Lounge taking a break. She was feeling a little light headed earlier.
Susan: (Continuing to walk towards the Doctors Lounge) Thanks. (Opening the door to the Doctors Lounge and walking in)
Abby: (Sitting at the table reading a bridal magazine, looks up at Susan as she walks in the room)
Susan: (Walking over to the table and sitting down across from Abby) Chuney said you were feeling a little light headed earlier. Are you all right, you look a little pale; can I get you some Tylenol?
Abby: I'll be fine. Carter cooked last night. It's probably just that.
Susan: (Smiling at Abby) Remind me not to come over when Carter's cooking.
Abby: (Sliding the bridal magazine over to Susan and pointing to a picture in the magazine) do you like this dress for your bridesmaid dress?
Susan: (Smiling at Abby surprised) You want me to be your bridesmaid?
Abby: (Laughing) yeah of course I do. Who else would I ask!
Susan: I'd be honored. (Leans over and hugs Abby) So who's going to be Carter's best man?
Abby: I think he's asking Luka; they became pretty close after their adventure in the Congo.
Weaver: (Walking into the Doctors Lounge) Breaks over, we've got two GSW's rolling up in 5 minutes. (Turns around and walks out of the Doctor's Lounge).
(Abby and Susan get up and Follow Kerry out of the Doctors Lounge)
Scene 4
Carter is on the phone in his and Abby's apartment talking to His Mother.
Eleanor: Have you and Abby set a date for your wedding yet?
Carter: We're thinking about May.
Eleanor: That's not a lot of time to plan a wedding.
Carter: We don't want a big wedding anyway.
Eleanor: You both don't want a big wedding or Abby just doesn't want a big wedding?
Carter: (A little annoyed) Mum! We both want a small wedding, ok?
Eleanor: I just think a big wedding would be more appropriate considering the social standing of the Carter family. We don't want to disappoint anyone by not inviting them to your wedding.
Carter: (Looking at his watch) I have to go, my shift starts in an hour.
Eleanor: Think about what I said John.
Carter: Bye Mum (Hangs up the phone)
Scene 5
Abby, Susan and Weaver out of the ER together. Haleh, Luka and Romano are waiting in the Ambulance bay. Two rigs roll up. Doris steps out of one of the rigs backwards pulling Mr. Frankal on a gurney behind her, Raul steps out of the rig holding the other end of the gurney.
Doris: (Handing Romano Mr. Frankal's chart) GSW to the right upper quadrant. Good breath sounds, Pulse ox a hundred and eighty over sixty.
Romano: (Taking the chart off Doris and pointing to Susan and Haleh) You two follow me.
(Romano, Susan and Haleh push Mr. Frankal into the ER)
Morales: (Stepping out of the second rig pulling Mrs. Frankal behind him) GSW to the head, No breath sounds, pulse weak and thready.
Abby: (Looking at Mrs. Frankal's head) There's brain fluid, do you think we can save her?
Weaver: (Starting to push Mrs. Frankal towards the doors of the ER) Lets just get inside first, shall we?
(Luka, Weaver and Abby push Mrs. Frankal into the ER)
Scene 6
Weaver, Luka and Abby are in Trauma 2 Finishing up with Mrs. Frankal.
Weaver: (Pulling her gloves off and looking at the monitors) Call it.
Luka: (Looking over at the clock) Time of death 10:09
Weaver: Are her family here?
Abby: They're waiting in chairs.
Weaver: Can you two finish up here while I go talk to them? (Walks out of the room to speak to Mrs. Frankal's Family)
Luka: (Unplugging Mrs. Frankal's monitors) You know Abby I'm happy for you and Carter.
Abby: (Starts to feel dizzy and falls to the ground pulling the tray off the trolley)
Luka: (Hears the tray fall, turns around and sees Abby on the floor) Oh my God Abby! (Runs out of the room and yells at Chuney as she walks past) Get me the portable ultrasound; we'll be in Curtain Area 3. I want to check if she's pregnant.
Chuney: (Continues to walk off to get the portable ultrasound)
Luka: (Runs back over to Abby picks her up and carries her quickly out of the room and across to Curtain area 3)
Scene 7
It's 8:50am and Carter has just arrived for work. He walks in the Doctors Lounge and puts his bag in his locker and grabs a white coat and puts it on over his shirt, then he grabs his Stethoscope and walks out of the Doctors Lounge and over to the Desk.
Carter: Has anyone seen Abby?
Chuney: (Walking past the desk with the portable ultrasound) She's in Curtain area 3 with Luka.
Carter: (Looking at the portable ultrasound) Which patient?
Chuney: (Walking towards Curtain Area 3) Abby!
Carter: (Follows Chuney into Curtain Area 3 and sees Abby lying on a bed awake and looks over at Luka who is checking her eyes with a little flashlight) What happened?
Abby: (Looking over a Carter) I'm ok. I just got a bit dizzy.
Luka: (Now feeling Abby's head with his hands) She fainted.
Carter: (Looking a Abby concerned) How long was she out for?
Luka: About a minute or two.
Chuney: (Going to hand the portable ultrasound to Luka) Here you wanted this?
Luka: (Looking from the portable ultrasound to Carter) Give it to Carter. He can do it.
Chuney: (Passes the portable Ultrasound to Carter and looks over at Abby) Hope you're feeling better. (Walks out of the room)
Luka: (Starting to walk out of the room) I'll leave you to it. (Walks out of the room)
Scene 8
Carter and Abby are still in Curtain area 3. Carter is using the portable ultrasound on Abby to check if she's pregnant. A big grin appears on Carter's face.
Abby: (Sitting up and trying to see the screen on the portable ultrasound) What?
Carter: (Turning the portable ultrasound around for Abby to see the screen) It looks like about four weeks.
Abby: (Doesn't say anything and just stares at the screen on the portable ultra sounds)
Carter: (Bouncing up and down) Well?
Abby: (Looking back at Carter) Well what?
Carter: (Sitting on the edge of Abby's bed) How do you feel?
Abby: Better.
Carter: (Picking up Abby's hand and places it on top of his hand) No I mean about the baby.
Abby: (Smiling at Carter) Oh. I'm a little scared and but mostly excited.
Carter: If you're worried about the Baby being Bipolar, don't. He or she will be beautiful and we'll love it even if it is Bipolar, ok?
Abby: (Smiling back at Carter) I know. Wow John we're having a baby.
Carter: (Leans over and hugs Abby with a big grin on his face) Yes we are. Well I guess we'll have to have the wedding in April then.
