Chapter 7
“A twisted day of tragedy and celebration”
Me:
Previously in Chapter 6 Abby and Eric are driving back to the party when a car comes speeding towards Abby's car.Scene 1
Carter and Maggie have just arrived at Mercy Hospital after getting a call that Abby and Eric were in a car accident. Carter and Maggie get out of Carter's jeep and run into Mercy's ER.
Carter: (Running up to the administration desk and talking quickly) Where is she?
Mary: (Looks up from the computer she was working at) Who are you looking for sir?
Carter: (Getting anxious) My fiancé Abby Lockhart she was brought in with her brother Eric a few minutes ago they were in a car accident.
Mary: Have a sit and I'll see what I can find out. (Walks off to find out what's happening with Abby)
Carter: (Quietly to himself) I just need to see that she's ok. (Walks over to a chair and sits down)
Maggie: (Is sitting on a chair next to Carter looks over at the patients in the triage area, sees Eric and calls out) Eric?
(Carter and Maggie get up and walk over to Eric)
Scene 2
Meanwhile Abby is in Surgery, Doctor White, Doctor Matthews, Nurse Brindle and Nurse Reegal are trying to say Abby's life.
Doctor White: (Has just cut opened Abby's chest with a scalpel) Suction I can't see what I'm doing.
Nurse Brindle: (Begins to Suck out Abby's blood and looks over at the monitors) Her pressures dropping.
Doctor Matthews: (Assisting Doctor White) Give her another two units of Saline.
Nurse Brindle: (Injects the Saline into Abby's catheter and looks at the monitors) Pressures stabilizing.
Doctor White: (Looking inside Abby's chest) It looks like might have pieced her Aorta with her ribs.
Doctor Matthew: (Cutting around Abby's Aorta with a scalpel) I need four by fours and someone get another unit of O-neg. She's losing blood quicker than we can get it in her.
Nurse Reegal: (Hands Dr Matthews the four by fours and looks over at Dr White) Do you think we can save her?
Doctor White: (Looks up at Nurse Reegal) We'll try but I really don't know.
Scene 3
Carter and Maggie are in the triage area talking to Eric. He has a few cuts and bruises on his face, his head is bandaged and he has a broken arm.
Maggie: (Looking at Eric worried) What happened?
Eric: (Taking quickly) I don't know, do you know. It happened so fast. One minute we were driving along talking about Abby's engagement party and the next a car comes speeding out of control towards us.
Maggie: (Looks at Eric curiously) Are you on your meds. You seem a little jumpy.
Eric: I've been on taking them for over a year now Mum you know that. I'm just a bit worried about Abby.
Carter: (Looks over at Eric when he hears him say Abby's name) Where is Abby anyway? Was she hurt very badly?
Eric: It looked pretty bad. I kept calling out her name but she wouldn't answer me. Another Ambulance brought her in before I got here, so I don't know where they've taken her.
Mary: (Walks up to Carter, Maggie and Eric carrying a chart) She's in Surgery right now. (Puts out her hand out for Carter to shake) By the way, my name's Mary
Carter: (Puts out his hand and shakes Mary's hand) Dr John Carter, How bad is it.
Mary: I don't know much, Dr White can tell you more when he gets out of Surgery. If you follow me I can take you up to the waiting area near in the OR.
Maggie: (Taking Eric’s hand in her's and Squeezing it gently) We'll be right back.
(Carter and Maggie walk off following Mary)
Scene 4
Doctor White, Dr Matthews, Nurse Brindle and Nurse Reegal are finishing up operating
Dr White: (Looking inside Abby's chest) We're done all we can here for now. Lets close her up and take her to ICU. Tell them to watch her pressure; she's not out of the woods yet.
(Walks out of the OR in to the waiting area)
Carter: (Pacing around the waiting area) Something's wrong, it's been to long, she should have been out of surgery by now.
Dr White: Is anyone here for an Abigail Lockhart.
Maggie: (Stands up) Yes, she's my daughter. I'm Maggie
Carter: (Walks over to Dr White and puts his hand out for Dr White to shake) Dr John Carter, Abby's fiancé.
Dr White: (Shakes Carter hand and points to a group of Chairs) Lets have a seat!
(Maggie, Carter and Dr White go and sit down)
Maggie: How is she?
Dr White: At the moment she's stable. We had to operate on her chest. One of her rips pieced a whole in her Aorta.
Carter: (Looking scared) Oh my God.
Maggie: (Looking worrily at Carter) Is that serious?
Dr White: It was touch and go there for a while, but we managed to repaired the hole and get her pressure stabilized for now. We're keeping and eye on her in ICU, if you want to go see her.
Carter: Thank-you Dr White.
Maggie: (Standing up) Can we see her now?
Dr White: Follow me, she's got a lot of tubes and she's still hasn't woken up yet, but you can sit with her, I'm sure she'd like that.
(Carter and Maggie follow Dr White into Abby's ICU room)
Scene 5
Carter, Maggie and Dr White go into Abby's ICU room. Abby is hooked up to monitors and is still sleeping. Nurse Brindle is in the room watching Abby's monitors.Dr White: How is she?
Nurse Brindle: BP's Hundred over eighty.
Dr White: (Pointing to Carter and Maggie) This is Dr Carter, Abby fiancé and Maggie Abby's Mother.
Nurse Brindle: (Smiling at Carter and Maggie) It's nice to meet you.
Dr White: (Looking at Abby then at Carter) Lets leave them alone with her. Just press that button if you need anything (points to a red button next to Abby's bed). I'll be back in ten minutes to check on her.
(Dr White and Nurse Brindle walk out of the room; Carter and Maggie go and sit down on the two chairs next to Abby's bed)
Scene 6
Two hours later Maggie comes back into the room after just going back down stairs to see Eric. Carter is lying with his head on the edge of Abby's bed with his eyes close.
Maggie: (Shaking Carter's shoulder's gently) Hey, you should go get some coffee.
Carter: (Opening his eyes and sitting back up to face Maggie) I'll be all right. How's Eric.
Maggie: His fine, just a little shaken up. You should go, besides I'd kinda like to be alone with her for a while.
Carter: (Looking at Abby worrily) Are you sure? What if she needs me?
Maggie: (Sitting down and taking Abby's hand in her's) Go John. We'll be fine Dr White will be back again in a few minutes to check on her.
Carter: Ok I'll back soon beautiful. (Stands up and leans over and kisses Abby gently on the forehead)
(Maggie watches as Carter walks out of the room)
Scene 7
Eric is lying on a bed in triage. A Nurse is attending to another patient with her back to Eric. Carter's at the coffee machine getting Coffee. Eric begins to shake uncontrollably.
Carter: (Turns around, sees Eric shaking and runs over to him) Oh my God Eric. (Turns around and yells) Someone get me some help. (Holds Eric’s forehead gently to stop him from seizing further and grabs a breathing mask from next to Eric's bed, puts it on his face and begins to squeeze it.) Come on Eric don't do this to me.
Nurse Petra: (Turns around and looks at Carter) I'll get someone. (Runs off to get another Doctor)
Dr Jillco: (Comes running out of a room towards Eric and Carter) What happened?
Carter: He started seizing. (Looks over at the Nurse) Why wasn't anyone watching him?
Nurse Petra: He seemed fine.
Dr Jillco: (Checking Eric's pulse) No Pulse lets get him to room A. (Looks over at Carter) Wait here.
Carter: I'm a Doctor. I can help.
Dr Jillco: Not at this hospital, your not. (Takes the breathing mask off Carter and begins to squeeze it)
Carter: (Looking at Eric) Please!
Dr Jillco: (Beginning to push Eric’s bed into the room) Ok, come on then we don't have time for this.
Carter: (Leaning over Eric’s bed and putting his hands on his chest) Starting Compressions.
Dr Jillco: (Looks over at the Nurse Petra) Get me a head CT. (Squeezes the breathing mask every three seconds)
Scene 8
Carter and Dr Jillco are still in room a trying to save Eric’s life. Nurse Petra runs back into the room carrying an X-ray.
Dr Jillco: (Takes the X-ray off Nurse Petra and looks at it) It looks like he had an Aneurysm from the accident.
Carter: (Starting to push Eric’s bed out of the room) Lets get him up to Surgery!
Dr Jillco: (Puts his hands on Carter's Arm) It's too late. There's no way a bleed like that to the brain can be fixed.
Carter: We have to try.
Dr Jillco: I'm sorry. He’s gone. (Looks over at Nurse Petra) I'll go talk to his family.
Carter: (Looks sadly at Eric) No I'll do it.
(Dr Jillco and Nurse Petra watch as Carter walks slowly out of the room with his head down)
Scene 9
Maggie is still sitting on a chair next to Abby's bed, Abby's still asleep. Carter walks into the room his eyes all red from crying.
Maggie: (Turns around and looks at Carter, a tear falls down her face) Eric’s dead, isn't he.
Carter: (Nods sadly) I'm sorry.
Abby: (Opens her eyes and looks at Carter sadly)
