Chapter 8
"To forgive and Never Forget"
Scene 1
It's five days later and the day of Eric's funeral. Abby is lying in her hospital bed in room C and Carter is sitting on a chair next to her bed talking about whether or not Abby should go to Eric's Funeral.
Carter: You just had a really big operation a few days ago. Are you sure your ready to go home?
Abby: (Her eyes starting to well up with tears) I need to be there John, for Eric.
Carter: (Taking Abby's hand in his and squeezing it gently) I'm sure Eric would understand. I don't think you're ready to go home yet.
Abby: (Starting to cry) I need to say goodbye. Please John, just ask Dr White if I can go home this morning.
Dr White: (Walks into Abby's room carrying her chart) You're looking a bit better today. How are you feeling?
Carter: She wants to go home. But I'm not sure she's ready yet. (Looks over at Abby)
Dr White: I think she'll be all right as long as she takes it easy for a few weeks.
(Looks at Abby) I'll be back in a few minutes to dispo you. (Walks out of the room).
Carter: (Standing up) Do you want me to get one of the Nurses to help you get ready.
Abby: (Ignoring Carter's question) Where's Mum?
Carter: I told her to go back to the apartment and get some rest before the funeral.
Abby: You should go too.
Carter: I think I should stay until they dispo you.
Abby: (Her voice beginning to crack) Just go Carter, I'll get one of the Nurses to drive me home.
(Carter walks out of the room. Abby watches him leave then puts her hands over her face and begins to cry uncontrollably)
Scene 2
Carter has just finished his shift and is signing out. He’s wearing his tux ready for Eric’s funeral. Chen walks up to him.
Chen: Nice tux, going somewhere special?
Carter: (Turning around to face Chen) Abby's brother's funeral.
Chen: Oh sorry. How is Abby by the way?
Carter: Physically she's getting better, emotionally. She seems to blame me for Eric's death.
Chen: I'm sure she doesn't blame you John. She was in a terrible accident that almost cost her not only her life and killed her brother. Talk to her. (Walks off)
Carter: (Watches Chen as she walks off and turns back around to continue signing off).
Scene 3
Abby is at her apartment sitting on the couch dressed for Eric's funeral. Maggie comes in to room with a cup of coffee for Abby.
Maggie: (Handing Abby the cup of coffee) How are you feeling now?
Abby: (Taking the cup of coffee off Maggie) Ok, how about you.
Maggie: (Looking sad) I'm going to miss him, Abby
Abby: (Looking away so Maggie won't see a tear fall from her face) Me too. I'm sorry Mum.
Maggie: What for?
Abby: (Turning back around and wiping her eyes with her hand) I don't know, For making Eric come to my engagement party. If I hadn't of insisted he come. I wouldn't have had to pick him up and he'd be alive today.
Maggie: (Putting her arms around Abby) Abby don't, this isn't your fault.
Abby: (Looking sad) Has John called yet?
Maggie: He called a few minutes ago, you were in the shower. He seemed a little upset. Is everything all right?
Abby: I told him to go home at the hospital.
Maggie: Don't blame John for this either. Eric's death wasn't anyone’s fault except that of the drunk driver that hit your car.
Abby: I know.
Maggie: (Standing up) We'd better get going your brother would be very disappointed if we were late for his funeral.
(Abby watches as Maggie walks out of the room).
Scene 4
Begins in the middle of Eric's funeral. The funeral is set in a beautiful cemetery over looking the river. There are flowers set up everywhere. Abby, Maggie, Carter, Susan, Sonya the Wyczenski's old family friend and a few of Eric's friends from the airforce are all seated on a group of white seats set out next to Eric’s grave. The Priest is standing in front of them giving the service. Will you remember me by Sarah Mclachlan is played in the background.
Priest: We have gathered here to celebrate the life of our dear Son, Brother and Friend Eric and although he may be gone from this earth he will remain in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved him.
Maggie: (Stares straight ahead blinking, trying not to cry)
Abby: (Begins to cry leans over and puts her head on Carter's shoulders)
Carter: (Puts his arms around Abby and rubs shoulders, tears welling up in his eyes)
Priest: (Continues) Please stand up and look to the Heaven in honor of Eric.
(Everyone stands up and looks to the sky a group of Charter and Airforce planes fly over them forming an Arrow in the sky pointing to another plane writing "Goodbye Eric" in the sky. Thy word by Amy Grant and Michael W.Smith begins to play in the background)
Scene 5
The funeral has ended and people are beginning to get up to leave. Abby, Maggie and Susan are still seated. Carter is standing with two of Eric’s friends from the Airforce talking to them.
Susan: (Looking over at Abby) It was a beautiful funeral. I bet Eric would have loved the areoplanes.
Abby: (Watching Maggie walk off slowly with her head down) What?
Susan: (Looks at Abby then over to Maggie) Do you want me to get her.
Abby: (Beginning to stand up) She's my Mother. I'll go.
Susan: You don't need this today. Let me. Please Abby.
Abby: (Nods sadly, turns around, gets up and walks towards the limo)
Carter: (Watches Abby walk off) Excuse me. (Leaves Eric's Airforce friends and begins to follow Abby)
Scene 6
Maggie is walking around the Cemetery with her head down. Stumbles over a grave near Eric's grave and begins to lean forward like she's going to fall on her face. Susan sees Maggie and runs over to her just in time to grab her by the shoulder's and pulls her back up.
Susan: Are you all right?
Maggie: (Looks up at Susan) You're Abby’s friend from the hospital.
Susan: (Putting out her hand for Maggie to shake) Yeah, I'm Susan.
Maggie: (Looks at Susan's hand but doesn't shake it) I hope he liked it. Do you think he would have liked it? I wanted to make it special for my baby boy.
Susan: (Putting her hand down) I'm sure he would have loved it.
Maggie: (Looking around the Cemetery) Where's Abby?
Susan: I think she and John are in the limo waiting. Do you want to go now?
Maggie: No I want to stay here for a while with Eric (Walks over to Eric's grave and sits down on the floor in front of it and begins to cry)
Susan: (Nods her head and sits down next to Maggie).
Scene 7
Carter and Abby are sitting facing each other in the limo alone talking.
Carter: (Looking at Abby sadly) I'm sorry about Eric.
Abby: (Sitting forward and placing her hands on Carter's knees) I know and I'm sorry about this morning at the hospital.
Carter: It's ok you were angry at me. I don't blame you I couldn't save Eric.
Abby: (Squeezing Carter's knee gently) John no. I wasn't angry at you. I was just upset and I wanted to be alone.
Carter: (Looking away) I should have saved him, for you.
Abby: (Turning Carter's head around to face her) And I shouldn't have made him come to that stupid engagement party. We can't keep blaming each other for Eric's death it wasn't our fault.
Carter: (Looking at Abby surprised) You don't want to marry me anymore?
Abby: (Rubbing Carter's cheek gently with the back of her hand) I didn't mean that John, of course I want to still marry you. You're the only constant thing in my life and I love you.
Carter: (Smiling at Abby) I love you too Abby and we'll get through this together.
Abby: (Smiling back at Carter) I know we will John.
