Henry Ford was born on July 30,1863 in a small town, Greenfield. He was a curious boy who asked many
questions. He also liked to create and fix things. For example, He invented something his
friends called a "puffer". He made a hole in an oilcan for steam to escape. He put in 2 upright
sticks on both ends of the oilcan. The sticks had a hole on the top. He put a shaft through the
holes in the sticks. There was a wheel on one end and a four-bladed fan on the other end of the
shaft. He made a fire under the oilcan and there by made steam come out of the hole. Steam spun
the shaft and the fan and the wheel rotated. A friend he had have is Edsel Ruddiman. He was interested
in herbs and plants. Starting from when he was 16, he worked at Detroit as an apprentice at Flower
Machine Shop. That winter his mother passed away. In 1888, he was married to Clara Bryant.
In the beginning, he stayed on my father's farm but he wanted to build a horseless
carriage so the first thing he had to do was move to Detroit. When he moved to Detroit he joined
the Edison Illuminating Company in 1891. His promotion to chief engineer gave him enough time and
money to make his own engines. Then, in 1893 his son Edsel Bryant Ford was born. He had to work
very hard to make his first invention, which I called the quadricycle in 1896. He made his own
company in 1903 and called it the Detroit Automobile Company. Detroit Automobile Company was
unsuccessful and ran out of business after selling twenty automobiles. This is because many
other companies were also selling automobiles. He was very discouraged by this and had no job.
Then Clara told him to build a fast car so everybody would be interested to work for him. So he
built a racer and called it the "999". He had Barney Oldfield drive it in a race. It beat
Alexander Winton's "Bullet". Then he had enough people and I started a new company and called it the Ford Motor Company.
The first car he made was what he called "Model A". It had improvements over his other cars. It
had a steering wheel and not a tiller, and it had two seats instead of one. There were many other
small improvements. Then he wanted to start making smaller and cheap cars so everybody can buy
them, not only the rich people. He named my cars a letter of the alphabet. When he reached Model N
thousands of people bought it and he knew he was on the right track. He worked on his new car for
many days. When he finally finished it he named it the Model T. It was such a big success he decided
to make another factory in Highland Park which is a suburb of Detroit. Still then the company
was too slow to meet the demand. So he got huge conveyer belts and the parts where brought to the
men and the process went much quicker. The new factory made so many cars that he decided to make
more factories. The parts would be made in Detroit and would be shipped to the other factories.
As business grew, he decided on giving the workers double salary. So, thousands of workers came
to work for him. Soon his factories where being built all over the world. He made Edsel the president
of the company. He made one final factory in Dearborn near the Rouge River. Then he made a second
Model A. He thought of how things have changed since he made the first Model A. This factory
became very famous.
