| Iowa Federation of Handweavers and Spinners | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Iowa Federation of Handweavers and Spinners is a state wide guild for people interested in weaving, spinning and just about any fiber art imaginable. We meet twice a year, on a Saturday. The meetings will start with coffee hour in the morning, followed by our speaker, then lunch, time to talk to old and new friends, to work on projects and to buy from the vendors. At some meetings, the speaker may also speak in the afternoon or offer a short workshop. Occasionally we will have an extended workshop before or after the meeting. The spring meeting usually has something to do with spinning. The fall meeting usually has something to do with weaving. Requirements for membership are very simple. You do not have to own a loom or a spinning wheel. You do not have to have ever woven anything. All you have to do is have an interest in the fiber arts and show up at meetings! We send out a newsletter twice a year to announce the specifics for the next meeting. We prefer to send the newsletter to you by email since this saves on postage, photocopying and paper, but, getting a copy by regular mail is still an option. Cost for a lifetime membership is $4 and we also ask for $4 every few years to help cover postage costs. There is usually a modest admission charge for each meeting, about $10-15, which usually covers lunch. It is not necessary to pay your dues before coming to a meeting. |

| Iowa Federation Fall Meeting
September 26, 2009 The Oneota Weavers Guild invites you to Decorah, Iowa, on Saturday, September 26, for a day of Scandinavian textiles. The morning session will begin at 9:00 at the historic Hotel Winneshiek in downtown Decorah. American presenters will speak on design and weaving for garments, a cross-country weaving study group, and spinning history. At 10:30 keynote speaker Inger Anne Utvg, dean of the faculty of Art, Design and Drama at Oslo University College, will describe her journey as an artist. She started weaving traditional boat rugs, heavy wool coverlets with one side of knotted pile. Now she uses vibrant colors and contrasting textures to create contemporary pile-weave artworks to honor Norways coastal history. There will be a break for lunch at noon. Bring a sack lunch or enjoy lunch out in one of Decorahs many downtown restaurants. The afternoon session will take place on the campus of Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, also in downtown Decorah. The Iowa Federation board and business meetings will be followed by a gallery talk in Sacred Symbols, Ceremonial Cloth. Guest curator Mary Kelly will explain the important pre-Christian functions of symbols (good luck, fertility, protection, and connecting the human and spiritual worlds) on embroidered and woven textiles. The gallery talk will end by 3:00. Stay and explore the other special textile exhibits at Vesterheim: Knitting Along the Viking Trail (knitwear designed by Elsebeth Lavold), Woven Women: Representations of the Female in Norwegian Weaving (a juried show), and projects by the Rya (Pile-weave) Study Group. The morning presentations are part of a three-day Conference on Norwegian Woven Textiles (CNWT) hosted by Vesterheim and Luther College. Pre- and post-conference fiber arts and jewelry workshops are listed online at vesterheim.org under Lifelong Learning. |
