| In the young adult novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, Johnas lives in a society ruled by roles. When children come of age, they are given a role that is to be held for life. Johnas is appointed "The Receiver." His job is to receive memories from "The Giver," who is an older and wiser man. Johnas would have stayed out of trouble if he had done just what he was supposed to do. Instead of following the rules of the society by remaining in his role, he broke out and became a giver to another. As a result, he had a chance to live a richer, fuller and more meaningful life outside his society. The relationship between teacher and student is much like the relationship described in this novel. The teacher is the "Giver," and the student is the "Receiver." Neither one is expected to ever take on the other role, but as illustrated in the novel, true learning cannot result from a relationship like this. It's only when one breaks out from the other that meaningful learning can take place. We as teachers have a lot to give our students, but we must never forget the lessons they can teach us. Even the Giver in the story learned from Johnas, and was affected in the end by this exchange of roles. When teachers and students become PARTNERS in education, the traditional roles are broken, and meaningful learning begins. |

| I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my personal approach that creates the climate. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. . . . Haim Ginott |
