| September 2002 Guild Tidings The official Publication of The International Songwriters Guild Volume 7, No. 9 NEXT MEETING 5:00 PM Sunday, September 1st, 2002 The International Songwriter's Guild meets the first Sunday of every month at the Central Florida Musician's Union building at 3020 East Robinson (at the extreme east end of Robinson less than a block from Herndon Airport). Songwriters, composers, performers, publishers, and the curious are encouraged to join us. Non-members are invited to attend a meeting or two to get a feel for our group and what we do. Officers: President/Treasurer Russ Robinson (407) 851-5328 Vice President/Member Reception Matthew Griffin (407) 903-1212 Secretary Evelyn Nelson (863) 644-8699 Membership Coordinator Susan Foster-Trewick (407) 679-4017 Web Consultant Asli Walker (407) 359-0506 President's Letter Dear Members, Well, here it is fall and the temperature remains in the 90's. At least we can write our songs in the comfort of great air conditioning. Imagine Irving Berlin and some of the world's greatest composers sweating it out in the old days. Really, shouldn't we be doing better? Let's blame it on TV. I find my mind is not where it should be sometimes. Just a few lines to thank all of you that attended my Birthday Cruise Line Bash. Two of my close friends plus the ship's ticket counter claimed they counted 191 people in our group, some from the Guild and some from outside. Member Bob Neace arranged a private room for us to eat once the word got around. The lounge had one corner with balloons designating our group's seating. Bob did his usual fine show. The entire week was celebration time; I had a total of 4 parties! Even though I put the word out for "no gifts", I still got many. It does my heart good to feel loved by my many close friends. The Guild is my life and all of you are my family. God bless you all! I am elated with the new crop of writers attending our meetings. Too, I must say I can really see how critiquing is helping. Most of you are accepting it in good faith, and it shows in each month's sessions. Keep up the good work. Elsewhere in this newsletter you'll find some good advice given by a famous songwriter; I'll tell you his name at the meeting Sunday. Bring printed lyrics so we can critique more easily when we listen to your tapes and CDs. Best ever, Russ Robinson A well-known professional songwriter wrote this. Russ will reveal the author at Sunday's ISG meeting. "Few things hurt me more than critiquing a song that a writer has spent an enormous amount of money and energy demoing-when I know that the song still needs work. One of the most important elements in developing my career was learning to put my ego aside and accept that rewriting is a natural part of the songwriting process. Indeed, my first chart single was a song that I'd rewritten (at a publisher's urging) seven times. If I had stopped after critique #6, I wonder what impact it might have had on my career." ISG member Barbara Ross is home recuperating from a serious automobile accident. We send out our best wishes for a speedy recovery, Barbara. ISG members, please keep her in your prayers.
