Ah yes! Capcom made another game to add to the RE (Resident Evil) series, RE3. Hmmm...does this game give the same "horror effect" as the other top horror games?
For those who aren't familiar with the RE series, here's a general, non-spoiling summary. Once upon a time, the world was peaceful and calm (supposedly) until a corporation called Umbrella came to existence. Soon after, there were strange reports about monsters and zombies appearing out of no where. Only a few know that the appearence of the monsters is somehow connected to Umbrella...hope that sums it up.
Anyways, RE3 takes place just hours before RE2. You control the S.T.A.R.S member Jill Valentine who had just when though the ordeal in the once zombie-filled mansion (the first RE). All of a sudden, Raccoon citizens are infected with the "zombie virus" as well and it's up to you to help her escape the city.
The gameplay is practically the same as the other REs; You shoot zombies, use run away tactics to conserve ammo (well...alittle), and solve puzzles to proceed through the game. the only differences though, are that RE3 has scenes where you have to decide on what to do (in a short amount of time), that you can now mix certain types of gunpowder to get ammo, and that you can now use the environment to your advantage to kill the monsters. I specifically like the decision scenes, because it adds tension and pressure to the game. It makes your brain go to overload! Great addition! To give you an idea how you can use the environment to your advantage, I'll give you an example. Lets say you're in alley and suddenly a group of zombies appear. What do you do besides going on a shooting spree and wasting ammo? Well, luckily there's an oil drum next to the group and so...you shoot it. What happens? Well, you get flame broiled zombies! Though I must admit that I got kind of bored playing the game. Maybe it's because it's all too familiar. Been there, done that right?
The graphics are quite immpressive like always. Capcom did it again with the (JPEG?) realistic backgrounds and the 3D characters and enemies. The zombies look kind of simple though (not as detailed as in RE2). I guess the reason why Capcom did that is to compensate for the greater amount of zombies they put in the game. Oh! There's not a lot of CGI's (movies) as they were in RE2. I wonder why?
The sound effects are pretty good. Everything from the moans of the zombies, the errie breeze blowing constantly in Raccoon city, to the voices of the characters. The music is pretty good also. A word of advise, though, about the music. Everything you hear a sort of "tension music" playing in the background, prepare yourself!
The control is basically the same as RE2. You run by holding down a button, aim high or low (manually), etc. The only differences are the concept of dodgeing and the quick turn around. By pressing the aim button right before an enemy is about to strike, you'll be able to dash aside or roll out of harms way. This is essential when you encounter the NEMESIS. The quick turn is done by pressing the run button and the direction pad at the sametime. I must give credit to Capcom for those great additions!
So...should you buy this game? Well, if you're a fan of the RE series, I would say yes definately. If you're not a fan, then don't. Save some money by renting it at a nearby video rental store. Oh, there's one more thing I should tell you. If you have played RE2, then it would be very important to play RE3. Why? Because it'll all come together (some parts of the RE2 story that was unclear would make sense).
