Capcom made yet another attempt to bring one of their greatest arcade games
right into your home console. Did they do a good job or did they make another
bad translation like X-men Vs Street Fighter?
Alrighty then, here's the story. What was I thinking!? Who cares, right? O.K. then, let's talk about the gameplay. For those who never played games such as Marvel Super Heroes, X-men Vs Street Fighter, and Marvel Vs Capcom, Marvel Vs Street Fighter (MvsS) is a fighting game that involves rapid button presses (for ground combos or air combos), quick thinking, and strategy. There are many buttons to use: light punch, light kick, medium punch, medium kick, fierce punch, fierce kick, 3 punches, and 3 kicks so obviously it also involves plenty of practice. You'll have two characters to choose from 25 (including secret characters) for battle. One is your main character who you will use and control to try to KO the opponent. The other is your helper who will perform counters, team supers, and "aid attacks" during battle. (I'm talking about normal mode, not cross over mode). Oh, about counters. I feel that counters are totally unfair when used in normal mode. No level is taken off when it is used so you can practically do it forever! Cheap hits are aplenty, because of this. Cross over mode simply allows you to switch between your 1st and 2nd character during a battle. Each character will have their own power bar (this time your other character CAN get hurt so be careful when using "aid attacks"), but both will share the level bar. Unfortunately due to Playstation's capabilities, you can't have a different team as your opponent's. For example, typical matches would be like this: Ryu and Ken Vs Ken and Ryu. Cross over mode, though, is still a good addition to MvsS for it offers a different way to kick ass! If you are a Street Fighter fanatic, you probably have this in your mind about MvsS: Does MvsS have slowdowns like in X-men Vs Street Fighter? Nope, not anymore! Capcom got back to its senses (finally!) and fixed the problem! No more slow combos, supers, and jumps! I don't really have anything to say about the rest of the categories, so I'll make it short. 1) Sound/Music it's...O.K. What's for sure is that the game's Sound/Music doesn't excel its arcade version. 2) Control is pretty responsive in MvsS. However, you might find yourself saying (rarely) "Hey! Fierce punch damn you!" 3) Obviously there's going to be some graphic changes when it comes to translating an arcade game to a, weaker in hardware, home console. There are some noticeable frames of animation missing, but the characters still look pretty good. Hmm....should you buy, just rent, or don't bother to play at all. If you're a Street Fighter fan, then I would recommend that you would go and get it. If you're not, then rent first and see if you like it or not. Don't however leave this game unplayed! ADDITIONAL INFO: I forgot to mention about Training mode, Hero battle mode, and Gallery. So, here it is: 1) Training mode is a great addition to MvsS. A few hours on this mode and you'll jump from a beginner to a novice in no time! 2) Hero battle mode is not as fun as cross over mode and normal mode, but hey it's nice to have. In this mode, you either control a Marvel team or a Street Fighter team to fight a CPU-controlled Street Fighter or Marvel team. 3) A very nice addition to MvsS. You need to earn those pictures first, though, by beating the game with every character in battle (normal) mode. |
