First of all, you won't encounter much enemies. In the first Silent Hill game, it's hard to walk around town with out running into monsters. That's not the case in Silent Hill 2 (at normal difficulty). The lesser the monsters, the lesser the feeling of hopelessness you'll get while playing the game. Second of all, most of the monsters in Silent Hill 2 can be easily out runned and killed. The running dogs, the jumping monkeys, the flying demons are gone leaving slow deformed mannequins, armless humanoids, and evil nurses to deal with. They're easily beaten too once you obtain the steal pipe and the great knife. Not much need for guns here. Would you feel hopeless if you encounter such inferior monsters?

GRAPHICS (8.9)                                                             There's improvement in graphics from the first Silent Hill. The town Silent Hill looks almost exactly like the one seen from the past one. The characters, however, are much more detailed, enough to see little difference between a cut sequence and real-time graphics. The mannequin monsters you'll encounter have that sort of "shine" to them just like a real mannequin would have. Lighting effects have been greatly improved enough so that you could see the shadows of the objects you shine your flash light at. Very nice!

SOUND/MUSIC (9.5)                                                                     The sound effects are probably the best I've heard from the PS2. Silent Hill 2 uses sound effects extremely well in order to scare its players. In certain parts in the game, you'll hear freaky noises that seem to circle around James even though you have two speakers. Heh, I think the sound effects alone would scare you more that anything else! The music Silent Hill 2 offers is pretty good. All the music Silent Hill 2 plays "fits in" with the situation at hand and, most importantly, the music is very chilling and frightful.

CONTROL (9.3)                                                                                 Controls are adequate in Silent Hill 2. James's movements/actions can be easily controlled. That along with the pressure sensitivity feature, gives Silent Hill 2 a 9.3 in this category.

CONCLUSION (9.0)                                                                      Silent Hill 2 definitely the scariest game for the PS2 thus far. It, however, doesn't dominate over the king of survival horror - Silent Hill. Silent Hill 2 is a good game to buy and definitely a game to rent.
