Racer is base on the race sequence in the movie. You get to
pilot many podracers (race machine), 28 in total, each podracers will be
pilot by different aliens, and yes Anakin Skywalker is in the game, even
thought he is not an alien. There are many tracks in the game, but
I haven have time to earn them all yet, as this game difficulty is quite
high on the later levels.
The first time I play this game is at Toys 'R' Us, it was pretty cool,
I'm not crazy about it. Now that I have the final version on my N64,
I was quite surprise how will the game play, this game is currently my
favorite racer, forget about the Ridge Racer Type 4 for the PSX.
The graphic in this game is amazing, it is probably the best on N64, especially
when you consider the game is running so fast (650 mph)(R4 who?). I have
to admit, with each installment Star Wars games on N64, the graphic just
keep on getting better and more pop up. Did I just say POP-UP, this
game have quite a problem with pop-up. When you first play any tracks,
the pop-up will normally drive you crazy because you run into stuff that
originally not there. But once you get to knows the tracks, the pop
up should no longer be a problem. (Note: In order to play the game in HI-Resolution
mode, you need the N64 expansion pak, without it, the game will not look
that good.)
The Control is excellent, very responsive, and the game utilize the rumble
pak quite well, especially when you use the booster. One thing that
I do not like the control is the 'C' button, I find that it quite hard
to get use to, it is very awkward, but luckily, it not like something that
you need to master to beat the game. However, it does help if you
can master it.
The
Sound quality, all I can say is that it similar to those in the movie,
but not as good, beside is N64 compare to Dolby Digital. I guess
maybe a re-release version of this game on the next generation system might
have the same quality as the movie. It was nice that you can actually
make the Aliens and Skywalker talk $h!t by tapping the 'R' button twice,
nice touch. After all of those good things that I had say,
by now, you probably wonder how the game play.
Well,
I'm proud to say that this game is just amazingly good. This game
is moving at a very fast frame rate (650 mph). With booster and trash talking
all over the race, and interesting vehicles design, this game is definitely
a much have for SW fan or non-SW fan. One more thing, this game consist
of a Tournament, free trial, practice, time attack, and finally most important
of all, 2-players mode. The Tournament mode is just like the
movie and all other games out there, you race, earn money, buy new parts
or upgrade your vehicle whenever you want to, with the exception, you in
the SW universe (COOOOLLLLL). Also, the only way to get new podracers
in this game is by placing first on any tracks in the Tournament mode.
Now get out there and pick up this game, and remember, the FORCE will always
be with you. |
