Finally, Konami decided to make a game for the N64. What game is it? Konami
is continuing the long, classic series, Castlevania 64. Is it better than
Castlevania SON? Hmmm....
Castlevania 64 has the same classical story line; go through Dracula's
castle to defeat him. However, Konami added some new things in Castlevania's
story to surprise Castlevania fans. For example, Konami added a second
character to use in addition to the classical character who can use a whip,
Carrie (a young girl who possesses the power to shoot energy balls). Horrifying
cinematic scenes have been added also to surprise the average Castlevania
fan. These cinematic scenes are highly detailed and can really, I mean
really scare you sometimes! There's a scene in Castlevania 64 where you're
standing next to a mirror and out of nowhere, a vampire is right in your
face! Scary, huh!
The sound and music Castlevania 64 has to offer is practically the best
I heard from the N64. When Castlevania's intro comes on, you'll be shocked
to hear a realistic violin playing! "Boss music" (music played when fighting
a boss) and stage music will eventually be stuck in your mind because they're
so good. However and unfortunately, the sound/music isn't as great as Castlevania
SON's.
Controlling your character is pretty much O.K. I had no trouble hitting
enemies (thanks to Castlevania 64's targeting system), climbing , running,
ducking, using weapons and items. The only thing I had trouble doing is
jumping from ledge to ledge. Why do you ask? It is because of the camera
angles. Sure you could change camera angle modes, but still it doesn't
help a bit. My advice to you is to save your game before doing any ledge
to ledge jumps.
Gameplay is sort of different than the rest of the Castlevanias. In one
level, you'll have to run from a Frankenstein holding a chain saw! In another
level, you'll have to blow up walls by placing two "ingredients" next to
them (hardest and most irritating level of the whole game!). Also, Castlevania
64 has a new day/night time system which effects certain situations and
especially the strength of enemies.
Though the game is relatively short, even though there's two endings, it
is O.K. to buy. But why not rent it instead? You'll have enough time to
experience what Konami's Castlevania 64 has to offer.
